Red Pandas at Australia Zoo

In April, Australia Zoo welcomed two male red pandas into their new exhibit, situated near 'Tiger Temple'.

3yo Pusung shares his exhibit with the older Yoddah, who is 7yo. I'm not 100%, but I think they are from Melbourne Zoo. Can anyone confirm?

I found out the information on the Australia Zoo website.

I say i think they're from Melbourne Zoo because ISIS, states Australia Zoo have 2.0 Red Pandas, (in early April, they had 0.0), while Melbourne Zoo have 0.0 (in early April, they had 2.0 Red Pandas)!
 
Could it be something to do with the Sumatran tigers they bought in?
 
likely. though i had it in my head they came from another park.

interestingly they have moved the first two tigers they ever acquired - handraised bengal hybrids manus and khan, to CWSR.

i wonder what thats about? i would have thought that to be a bit of a waste considering the effort that has gone into training (and breeding) them in the first place?
 
Well they have always said they wanted species like orangutans at "Australia Zoo"

Wonder how much it would cost to see one :)
 
Yeah, you'd need to cash in your superannuation just to afford to see them! :p

In Australia, private zoos are a no-no (that is, zoos which are not open to the public) but Australia Zoo has beaten the system. Just keep a collection of common stuff (crocs, goats and donkeys) for the public and keep the interesting/valuable animals off-display (except at horrendous fees) and you've got virtually a private zoo!
 
wow that sucks paying extra to see animals. but the zoo is a great to visit , and its going to be a huge zoo carnt wait to its finished.

There are very few exotic animals on view for a very high price to start with, progress on new exhibits seems slow these days so only time will tell the story

that to me is a real step backwards from Steve's philosophy. Whatever you may have thought of him he was totally dedicated to conservation and animal wellfare. And now Australia Zoo are sending animals to an Indonesian safari park!?!

okay - i'm not going to get all PC and pretend that indonesia has even the slightest of slightest hint at a decent record with animals welfare in zoos.

but

you wanted tigers didn't you? you want something, you gotta give something back. we can pretend it works differently but it doesn't. we harp on all the time around here about how great it would be if we had a sustainable captive population of silvery gibbons. or fresh sumatran tiger bloodlines or more elephants from thailand.

now i'm not sure exactly what australia zoo traded for those kanagroos, but had it been a frikken loris then so be it. because those kangaroos.....

well i ate one for dinner last week!

lets not be selfish. and lets not pretend grey kangaroos are anything more than the equivalent of NZ sending a few feral possums.

and lets not make more of irwins conservation ethics than there was. i truly believe he was obsessed with animals and nature. i also truly believe he made a contribution. but he was clearly not a deep thinker. had he been so he probably wouldn't have been such a outspoken supporter of a government with an appalling, appalling environmental record. seems steve, like so many other self proclaimed conservationists out there, completely forgot that you can plant as many trees as you like but unless you vote for parties with good environmental policy, you look, in my book, like as big an idiot as steve irwin did every day of his profession career.
 
In Brisbane there was a huge uptake of water tanks to avoid trhe water restrictions we were having. So for a purely personal/selfish reason rather than for a high minded enviromental reason. The Green Party seems to get an average of around 8% of votes in an election. Maybe that's is just in city regions, don't know what it would be in country areas.
I think from my reading that there are two main areas of thought when it comes to conservation. There is the school of thought that thinks that everything on earth is here for our benefit and so we should conserve things because we like/want/need them. So conserving whales is good because people like whales and they generally don't do any harm but if a dingo attacks a child on Fraser Island then all dingos should be exterminated from the island. Rainbow lorikeets are nice because they are colourful but crows are just a damn nuisance and should be got rid. And don't get started on noisy. smelly dangerous fruitbats.
Then there is the school of thought (which is my thought) that we are just a part of an entire amazing wonderful world and because we are the most intelligent being on this planet we have a responsability to be careful stewards, not because it would benefit us but because everything has a right to exist despite us.

Then there are those who are just too busy coping with all the crap in their lives to spare the time to be concerned about such things. It isn't that they are neccessarily dumb but when you lose your job, have a huge mortgage to pay, hate your job but cannot leave it, worrying if your teenage child is taking drugs etc etc etc the enviromental is very low on the list of priorities.

Like you Phoenix I get very depressed because I tend to be cynical abd look at things in a half empty glass way. There are times when I think why should I bother caring when really it doen't do any good and only makes me unhappy. But if I didn't care I wouldn't have any hope and that would be just too bleak.

I'm not a good logical thinker but I try to be. Some things are just so complicated that I don't have a hope of understanding the issue and all the ramifications (Global warming for intance) and sometimes I let personal likes and dislikes get in the way (hunting anyone?).

BTW I always vote with the enviroment foremost in my mind but that may be a luxary as I have a secure job, people I love and trust, money in the bank and a secure home to live in.
