Australia Zoo Australia zoo

From what I hear another female white rhino has arrived at Australia zoo to join their male

That would be a 5yo(approx) female from TWPZ. According to the white rhino ARR, the arrivals of both females were supposed to be:
coordinated so that animals arrive as close together as possible

:)

What direction/course has Australia Zoo taken since the death of Steve Irwin? Is it still developing... or stagnating?[/QUOTE]

I looked at the Australia zoo website yesterday to see if there were any news about any new exhibits and saw on the zoos "Zoo Overview" which says "Expansion plans going FULL STEAM ahead" which is wonderful news.

That would make it either Amira or Inyeti. Do you happen to know which one?

thank you for that. Hoep she does well and has plenty of calves. This gives Australia zoo quite a herd, 3 males, two females and a future calf.

I can find no mention of Orangs or Gorillas on their website as there once was but it does state that their development plans are "Going full steam ahead" which is good to hear.

I will try to find out the answer to your questions for you Mark.

They've always said they would get Orangs "in the future", but in all honesty, I think they have too many animals off display already - don't you agree?

Any news on whats happening :)

It's been two years since this post was written and not one of these exhibits has been completed. The 'Madagascar Islands' is not due for completion until late 2009-early 2010 and i don't know what's going on with the 'African Safari'. The transfer of the giraffe from Perth Zoo is a good sign that there is progress being made, but when are the rhinos, cheetahs, tamarins, lemurs and now giraffe, going to come on to display?

:)

Information on Wikipedia state, The "Madagascar Island" exhibit is due to open in mid-2011 (If correct).

Should be a great attraction for the zoo.

Wonder how much extra you will have to pay.
Last week I spoke to a frined who visited during the school holidays with her daughter and grandchildren. It was the first for all four. My friend was horrified at the cost to get into the place and then really turned off when she discovered that you then had to pay extra to see anything interesting. Her statement was that it would have cheaper for the three of them to fly to Sydney and visit Taronga and you would see alot more.

Jay I would be surprised if Australia zoo were to charge the public any more in costs than they do now IF they do start to charge to much the public are just not going to pay it and if the public think they are not getting value for money I guess they wont go back again, but lets wait and see

Australia Zoo culls staff numbers | QLD News | Breaking News in Queensland | Bundaberg News Mail
25 January 2011

THE Sunshine Coast’s biggest tourism employer, Australia Zoo, has sacked 22 employees.

The Daily understands dozens of other workers have been forced to take unpaid leave and job share.

Zoo management yesterday blamed the job losses on a drop in visitor numbers due to the floods and the global economic crisis.

Only last week Sunshine Coast Destination chief Michael Denton pleaded with industry bosses to do all they could to ride out the tough times. “When the tourism industry catches a cold, the rest of the Coast sneezes,” Mr Denton said.

“If jobs are lost it will have a serious ripple effect. We are urging people to get online, book a holiday to the Sunshine Coast, to Queensland.”

Mr Denton was on leave yesterday but company spokes woman Karen Doane said no amount of crisis management and creative marketing could fully prepare for the disaster aftermath.

“In the wake of massive media attention, the perception has been that the Coast has been flood-affected and that having a holiday here would prove difficult if not impossible,” Ms Doane said.

“Destination feels for any business that has had to make the difficult decision to make staff redundant in order to preserve their long-term sustainability.

“What we can and are doing now is to take affirmative action to reverse the perception that the Coast is not open for business.

“We have campaigns in media, we are in daily contact with international and domestic travel journalists as well as other key industry,” Ms Doane said.

The Australia Zoo sackings equal about 5% of the 450-strong workforce.

It is not the first time the Irwins have cut jobs to keep out of the red. In March, 2009, the zoo announced it would lay off 26 staff and delay expansion plans.

Terri, Bindi and Robert Irwin made guest appearances on the Oprah Winfrey show, introducing the talk show queen to a collection of native wildlife.

They, like the rest of the tourism industry, were hoping to experience a surge in bookings.

Tourism contributes about $1.56 billion to the Coast economy each year and directly provides one in every five jobs.
a lot of cynical comments under the article!

well, I just read this whole thread through and it is interesting seeing the....er, development of Australia Zoo. At the risk of being seen as facetious, here are the highlights:

The zoo is planning the worlds biggest Gorilla enclosure ( WOW ).

Another exhibit planned is the American river exhibit with Alligators with a boat ride along the river.

The plans are a large range of Afican animals for the Africa exhibit (no details).

Some news for those interested in the progress at Australia zoo the new South east Asian and Madagascan exhibit will be 60 acres in size, not a bad size.

With all the new exhibits that are planned for the zoo over the next few years such as the new Safari, Gorillas, Orangs, Managaser Islands, Alligator river and more should keep many people coming back, we could of done with a zoo in the Brisbane region years ago so I hope now we can make up for lossed time with the Deleopment of Australia zoo, It was stated in the papers the other day the staff numbers will go from 550 now to 1000 in the next five years and by 2015 to 2000, by the sounds of it they have big plans.

Since Steve died they've opened a red panda enclosure and re-developed a fox enclosure for binturongs.

That's it.

Mark, you're the last of the true believers! ;)

Australia Zoo is going backwards, not forwards. Mind you, if they open the Madagascar exhibit (let's be clear here, it's a ring-tailed lemur island with a few tortoises) they'll probably be able to get away with keeping the cheetahs, rhinos and giraffes behind-the-scenes for another 5 years or so. I reckon you'll see a rollercoaster in Beerwah before you see a gorilla.

And something has just occurred to me... it's been said ever since Steve died that Terri wants to take the kids back to the US to live, but of course the family business is here. I wonder if the Las Vegas ambitions have anything to do with Terri's homesickness? Certainly, Bindi's song-and-dance routine would appear to be more at one with Nevada-style tourism than Queensland.
