Australia Zoo Australia Zoo's animals names

Hi everyone!
Just made an account, so I'm extremely new here, but I had one question I posted on Reddit, and was directed here :)

I was just wondering if anyone had a list of the names (not species) of as many Australia Zoo animals as possible; I'm trying to replicate it in Planet Zoo and I'm really struggling to find names other than the saltwater crocs and dingoes.

Sorry if this is on the wrong forum btw, but thanks :)

Awesome! Thank you!

I think the main ones I'm looking for now are the wombats, roos, koalas, cassowaries (can't find ANYTHING on them or ANY pictures of their exhibit near the dingoes), and any snakes ppl know ab :)

Happy to help! :)

Unfortunately, with the exception of Southern cassowary and Dingo, very few Australian zoos post information on individual native animals due to the sheer volume held across our zoos (and fast reproductive rate).

I did find this on Australia Zoo’s cassowary:

Australia Zoo welcomes cassowary chicks

Parents Kevin and Babinda laid two separate clutches of eggs, the first having to be artificially incubated by the Australia Zoo team, and resulting in the successful hatching of Fergo. The second clutch was incubated by dad Kevin, and two of those eggs have also successfully hatched.

There’s 1363 photos of Australia Zoo in the gallery, so you might find any exhibit photos you’re after there:

Thank you very much!

And yeah, as an Australian myself, I do understand that zoos don't post much about individual animals; much of my learning in the past involves chatting to wandering volunteers at zoos. That's how I found out why Adelaide doesn't move their lions to Monarto :D

I think the final thing would just be any of the reptiles, if anyone knows any of their names.

Thanks so much everyone btw, I tried asking for help ab 5 times on Reddit and go no help at all :/

In terms of Reptiles, Australia Zoo holds quite a lot, but these are probably the most notable, outside of crocodiles (I believe they've got a series on YouTube introducing most of their crocs if you want to find those)

Indah is a female Komodo Dragon.
Lagertha is a female Komodo Dragon (not on display)
Naga is a male Komodo Dragon.
Ragnar is a male Komodo Dragon.

Alimah is a male Albino Burmese Python.
Niki is a female Green Anaconda.
Jenny is a female 'Cow' Burmese Python (not on display)
Utah is a male King Cobra.

Goliath is a male Aldabra Tortoise.
Igloo is a male Aldabra Tortoise.
Coconut is a female Aldabra Tortoise.

Also, you said these were the most notable, are you aware of the name of any less notable reptiles there? (I'm going to build Robert's Reptile House soon, and want as many realistic names as possible :) )

Thanks!

Australia Zoo has a habit of giving many of their animals pretty 'human' names.
It's a strong theme across the park. Their two Red Panda cubs are Teddy and Scarlet, they have a Jabiru named Douglas, the Rhinos born at the park were named Mango, Winston, Humphrey, Carrie and Kingston, Spencer and Mark are both pythons used in guest presentations, Fletcher is a Brahminy Kite and Byron a Whistling Kite, and the list just goes on.

In general, if an animal is named by Australia Zoo, there's about a 90% chance it will get a very humanoid name. So if you're stumped on the real name of an animal at the zoo, pulling up a list of common baby names should do the trick.

Ok, thanks.

Do you happen to know any other names of current animals?

The other 10% being advertisements, so you could also get away with it being ‘in-universe’ and just call ‘em “Gulpee” or “Chief Beef”

Something you should remember is that naming animals is not an essential part of animal husbandry in zoos. Animals in zoos have names either as a convenient handle for keepers or for PR purposes. Thus a number of animals will have two names, while many animals, especially less significant species or those where large numbers are held, will have none. On the other hand, all animals will have a number for record-keeping purposes.

What are their intentions with 4 female Sumatram Elephants?

What are their intentions with 4 female Sumatram Elephants?

When they were imported, they stated intentions to import a bull for breeding; but four years on, this is yet to occur and most of us are sceptical it ever will.

People on here have spoken to Australia Zoo staff, who have now acknowledged breeding will focus on the two younger cows as the elder two will be past the maximum recommended age for first time breeding - so already that’s two viable founder cows lost.

The game changer may well be the move to PC. An all female non breeding herd is less appealing from a visitor engagement point of view compared to a majestic tusked bull, energetic sub adult bulls or cute calves. With this in mind, breeding would greatly enhance the visitor experience - which may provide the incentive they need to get cracking on importing that bull!

If they can import a bull and breed, then great. But otherwise their infrastructure would have been better off supporting the regional breeding programme instead of doing their own thing by importing Sumatran elephants.
