Australian Authorities Plan To Kill Great Whites Off Coastline

Unfortunately this kind of policy is typical of the small minded, short term thinking of our state governments in Australia. Rather than waiting for the results of the research into WHY shark attacks on local beaches are increasing, they have to be seen to be doing something to protect beach goers.

The other problem is the general apathy of people who live in Perth - if canvassed, they would probably disagree with this policy but it's unlikely they will do anything about it.
 
This seems to pop up every year in the media. Mostly due to the annual number of attacks on the Western Australian coastline on surfers by great whites. From what I have heard, most people disagree with culling the sharks, but others do agree (mostly surfers).

I have a feeling that these attacks occur on beaches that are quite isolated and exclusive (therefore not really known to authorities), where there are no real shark nets or shark monitoring. This is just my own opinion.

I don't agree with it at all. However, we do not get great whites on the east coast (just the very calm and timid bull sharks :D), so if there was to be an attack around Sydney, I am sure many would jump on the bandwagon of culling them. It is sad that great whites have a negative image here in Australia, and they are the focus of most media.

Hopefully, just like they prevented the massive super-trawler from fishing in Australian shores, the government will re-consider and research more into the matter.
