Austrian Zoos

Just spotted this thread so late to the party!

I can definitely recommend Vienna, Innsbruck and Salzburg. I've just added some photos of Salzburg to my gallery - http://www.zoobeat.com/gallery/showgallery.php/ppuser/426/cat/500.

The Haus der Natur natural history museum and terrarium in Salzburg is very good - I'll try to get some pictures of that up later.
 
Giant Pandas in Vienna

ISIS currently lists 2.2 with 2 births in the past 12 months. Is this another ISIS mistake? The first baby was only born in August 2007 so this hardly seems possible. No mention of this on the zoo's website.

Strictly there were two youngsters born in August but one died. I would guess this is where ISIS gets 2 births. Not sure if they ever worked out whether the second cub was stillborn or died after birth, but its mentioned on the BBC:

Besides San Diego (in the USA), this is the only Zoo I know of that has both giant pandas and koalas -- well known as the 2 most crowd-pleasing animals in zoos. Does anybody know of any other zoos that has both of them? Certainly there are no others in the USA, and I can't think of any other European zoos that do. Maybe Tokyo or someplace in China? I know the Adelaide Zoo in Australia will soon get pandas, so they would then have both (I think). Anybody else?

Edinburgh Zoo may have both in a couple of years. They already keep Koalas and have enquired about Pandas.

Yep -- I looked it up. The other zoos that I believe have both are Taipai (Taiwan) and Guangzhou (China). Until Adelaide gets their pandas, that means there are only 5 zoos worldwide with both koalas and pandas. Pretty impressive!
 
Here's another Chiang Mai in Thailand, as well as San Diego, Guangzhou and Vienna, they have bred both species too
 
Why is there a car in the pool for the Indian rhino at Vienna zoo???

It's some stupid special exhibit to show "the real story" of pollution on earth. This is all over the internet. Personally I hate it! Zoos should be a place for people to escape from the bad things in life -- not have them shoved in our face. What do you all think?

I think modern western societies offer their more pampered citizens plenty of other opportunties to indulge in escapism. Personally, I appretiate a zoo that is not afraid to rap on some knuckles and raise social awareness, especially if there is a realistic chance to improve things. Wearing blinkers and ignoring reality won't change anything; this isn't a ideal world, and the sooner everyone realizes that, the sooner we can start improving it to be at least a little bit better.

The car? Purely a matter of taste; at least the duck seems to appretiate it.
 
Does anyone knows how the two female whito rhinos were called? The male got the name Brutus.

Edit: Oh I forgot the zoo. The three rhinos does live in Zoo Schmiding.
 
If anyone can help me, I'm putting together a database with statistics of some of the world's top zoos. Essentially, I need the annual attendance figures for the following Austrian zoos:

Salzburger Tiergarten, Alpenzoo Innsbruck, Tiergarten Schoenbrunn (Vienna)

Can anyone help me? Is there a good internet source where these can be looked up?
 
Well, that won't be easy. Have you tried to contact the zoos?

I might possibly help with Zoo Vienna. Just send a PM to me what you are looking for exactly, then I'll try to get those figures for you.

don´t you know if the lesser flamingos were moved out of Schönbrunn? Their 13 lesser flamingos disappered from ISIS within last days.
