The announcement of the 2013 AZA awards is only 3 months away.
Nominees have not yet been announced, but since when does that stop ZooChat?

What's your guess?

From the AZA site:
The Association of Zoos and Aquariums, through its Exhibit Award, recognizes excellence in the area of live animal display and exhibit design by an AZA Institution (US or International) or Related Facility member. Only exhibits that were opened in calendar years 2011 and 2012 can be considered for the 2013 awards. Exhibits that opened to the public in 2013 must wait until 2014 to submit an application.

For those who want to do their homework, the application:

I came up with a list of 15 potential nominees and while it is by no means a definitive list there is an extremely high level of quality with many of the new exhibits. Some zoos don't even bother applying for the prestigious AZA award and thus that makes it difficult to determine what zoo will be the eventual winner. Nevertheless, here are 15 noteworthy exhibits and it is well worth mentioning that 7 of them feature elephants!

Birmingham Zoo - Trails of Africa
Reid Park Zoo - Expedition Tanzania
National Zoo - Elephant Trails
Oklahoma City Zoo - Elephant Habitat
Toledo Zoo - Tembo Trail
Rosamond Gifford Zoo - Asian Elephant Preserve
Denver Zoo - Toyota Elephant Passage
Utah's Hogle Zoo - Rocky Shores
Phoenix Zoo - Orang-Hutan: People of the Forest
Virginia Zoo - Trail of the Tiger
Los Angeles Zoo - LAIR (Reptile House)
Fresno Chaffee Zoo - Sea Lion Cove
Saint Louis Zoo - Sea Lion Sound
Aquarium of the Pacific - Penguin Habitat
Georgia Aquarium - Dolphin Tales

Well surprise to all!
The latest AZA Communique magazine lists applicants for awards:

Exhibit -
"Jellies" - John G. Shedd Aquarium
"Ke-Re Reef" - SeaWorld San Antonio

That's it. All they wrote

It was mentioned that there were only 3 applicants this year! As Rob mentioned, STL Zoo won the Significant Achievement Award for Sea Lion Sound and no one won the Top Honors Award.

Interesting that only 3 zoos applied considering all the new exhibits that were eligible.

Also, thanks for the correction, the article makes it seem like STL Zoo won the top honors.

Yes the lack of applications was commented upon during the awards.
And I guess the press didn't know how to say "St. Louis Zoo takes damn high honors for new exhibit but not the highest"
