Hi there! I am a new ZooChat member. I did my best to see if this thread already existed, please let me know if I missed it.

Is anyone going to the conference this year? Has anyone been in previous years? What is it like? Is it worth going if I hope to create my own zoo?

AZA holds two conferences annually, the midyear conference in the spring and the annual conference in the fall. Typically, most of the animal programming is at the midyear; annual is more geared towards the executive leadership. Each conference lasts about a week and is filled with sessions, panels, vendor booths, workshops, etc, as well as general meetings for keynote speeches. The highlight of each conference is a zoo day at the host zoo or aquarium (the conference itself is held at a nearby convention center), which can last into the evening and is full of guided BTS tours and special interactions. There are usually also pre and post conference trips to other facilities in the region. I’ve been to 10 midyear (including the two where it was virtual because of Covid) and 1 annual.

Thank you for your clarification on conferences. I am referring to the annual that will be held in Calgary this year. Additionally, I appreciate your perspective on the differences.

What value rating would you give to networking possibilities and general knowledge consumption that would benefit my own ventures?

I think that's really going to come to, "What do you hope to get out of attending?" What specific things are you hoping to learn or connections are you hoping to make to advance your goal? It may be in your best interest to look into one or another of the AZA's professional development courses, such as Creating Successful Exhibits or Managing for Success - Career Development, for more in-depth learning opportunities.
