Intresting theory, I don't know how anyone could tell the Bornean orang are pregnant they have such round bellys anyhow :p
 
That's interesting about the Sumatran pregnancies being surprises as well. I suppose I'd always imagined that any pregnancy would be similarly obvious to a human pregnancy, despite them having naturally rounded tummies (for example, most larger ladies do eventually look pregnant despite carrying extra weight in the 1st place).

I bet the keepers are over the moon though.

Perhaps the presenters are under orders not to let anything like unannounced births or deaths reach the public until the zoo has done a statement?

(I rarely ask presenters questions anyway and try to wait for a keeper if I need to ask a question)

In orangutans genital swelling is certainly known to be an indication. However I'm not sure all females display this feature so the MW keeper was possibly talking just about their own experience.

Many zoos routinely don't advertise pregnancies in case the outcome isn't successful- I suspect this is just such a case.

That is true. You just have to look at Colchester (quite an open zoo in terms of news) and I think it was Zola, the elephant's pregnancy

I'm sure they are. No disrespect to presenters but their job doesn't involve being fully in the know about the individual animals so, apart from their set 'delivery' I would not regard them as a reliable source of information.

I can understand them not announcing a pregnancy (and I doubt whether Paignton will ever do that again!) but surely they can announce a birth and stop us having to guess?
 
Great news !!! Orang breeding in the UK seems to be improving recently - a birth expected at Jersey any day , a birth at Dudley ( though the baby died ) and a new male for Blackpool . After waiting months for 'pregnant' females at Paignton to pop , Chester seemingly surprises everybody !
 
I might get the chance to pop into Chester tomorrow, If I do I will make sure I have a camera with me but then am sure they will be no-shows :rolleyes:
 
That's great news! I have yet to catch a glimpse of any of the Bornean orangs let alone a baby one!! The repeats of Zoo Days featured Tuan the other night - the first I've seen of him! I will be visiting very soon with the mission of being successful this time now that there is a baby. Perhaps, it will be announced on the web site soon once they know all is ok?
 
That's great news after all the depressing news this week re Palm Oil being in so many products and the orangs' struggle resultant from the rapid loss of their habitat. The gentlelemur thread dated 'Blackpool visit 2 May' , which you replied to regarding the gorillas refers to a male orang that had come from Leningrad . Must admit this was the first I had heard of him , or have I read it incorrectly ?
 
I belive Sarikei is the Orangutan who gave birth, I will post pictures later which someone should be able to confirm.

I only got two pics, and not very good ones. :(

That is 'Raman' and he's been at Blackpool a number of years, since he was a little, and rather sickly, baby, along with the other young male 'Beau' from Twycross- who died. Raman is now an adolescent but I've heard he doesn't mate so they may need to do something about that before they get more babies.
