Bad Helmeted hornbill news

So Muslims are carving the Buddha into the casques of critically endangered hornbills? I'd say I don't know what part of that is most wrong, but it's obviously the hornbill poaching.

As I've said before, when the main threat to a critically endangered species is poaching, I think that the solution should be to round up all the remaining individuals and captive-breed them. Unfortunately, they've tried captive-breeding it and AFAIK all efforts have failed. The governments in question seem to have given up on captive-breeding, and Indonesia is infamously bad at stopping the poaching of birds. Malaysia may be better, I don't know, but they've got a long border with Indonesia in Borneo which mostly runs through the jungle. We've had one miracle with the discovery of a new population, maybe we'll see another.

My lifetime is likely to see the extinction of several hornbill species, among many other extinctions. Another species I'm really concerned about is the Sulu hornbill, but the Sulu hornbill at least has close relatives which will likely make it through.
