Bali Safari and Marine Park Bali Safari and Marine Park

After being temporarily housed in their habituation aviary for two months, on November 18, Bali Safari has released 15 Bali mynas around their park.

All three Taman Safari parks now has released a passerine species to freely roamed the nature around the parks. Bogor has released 40 black-winged starlings in 2016, while in 2022, both Prigen and Bali has released a myna species, Javan pied mynas and Bali mynas respectively.

The 16 young Komodo dragons, that were hatched on March 2022, has been displayed in the Komodo Dragon Island.

A new biome-themed exhibit named the "Rainforest Trail" has been opened.

The exhibit's main stars are a pair of jaguars, Oscar (M) and Bolivina (F). Other inhabitants include green iguana, red-billed toucan, triton and palm cockatoos, North Sulawesi babirusa, greater flamingo, chital, binturong, Aldabra giant tortoise, red-footed tortoise, helmeted guineafowl, eclectus parrot, rhinoceros hornbill, reticulated python, Asian small-clawed otter. For some reason, they have rabbits too.

Though I'm not really happy with some collection choice, it's still quite a fantastic news! I always like the American zoo's exhibit style, especially Omaha's Henry Doorly's and Bronx's. I'm glad that it somewhat implemented here in Indonesia. Really wish Taman Safari Bogor to have a exhibit like this, perhaps a South America-focused one.

Another great news! Bali Safari, with BKSDA support, has sent 280 pig-nosed turtles to West Papua to be released into their natural homeland. Bali Safari have a massive number of this unique turtle species, so I'm glad that they released some of them instead of overstocking them or to be sent to other, less conservation-focused zoos.

That's great news. The Marine Park was already due since the Safari's opening since 2007. What's taking so long?!

When visited in 2019
They said it would be open the next year
But because of covid it got postponed so hopefully in my visit in September it will be open

In the Taman Safari Indonesia social media, as part of their anniversary, they had teased two new "suprises". One of these I heavily suspect to be the opening of the Marine Park in Bali, which has been in a hell of development all the way since the Bali Safari Park opening in 2007. It's a marine park that is said to be planning to have dolphins, sea lions, seals, and penguins. The already opened Varuna, a large saltwater tank as a stage and setting for a drama performance, might also be a part of this Marine Park.

It's not really known what's the second upcoming project, I'm not really want to try to look a bit further into it as realisticly these would just be an unrelated company project. It's important to note that the Marine Park opening is just a speculation from me, not confirmation.

I uploaded approximately 220 photos of this zoo into the gallery and there's now a comprehensive overview of the park on ZooChat. The overall quality of the 'Taman Safari' parks is typically high, with this facility having excellent exhibits for species such as Tiger, Proboscis Monkey, Saltwater Crocodile, Komodo Dragon and many of the mammals in the Safari Journey area. And, most surprising of all is that there was an actual team of construction workers hammering away near the entrance where there's supposedly a huge tank that will be unveiled at some point in the near future. The zoo has been promoting its Marine Park for as long as I can remember, but at least there's something brewing now. ;)

A pair of llama has been displayed as the park's newest inhabitants, presumebly coming from the other Taman Safari parks.

It appears the pair are housed in the former chital exhibit in the Rainforest Trek, which I found to be interesting as I hope this is a slow attempt by the park to turn this zone into a proper South America-themed exhibit.

I feel Bali Safari should get brazilian tapirs, coendous, capybaras, flamingos and patagonian maras for the Rainforest Trek.

Marine Park Update

Emailed the Zoo today asking when and what the marine park will open and look like only to be provided with a vague response, that the marine park is still in development. When I was there in June 2022, it looked nearly done, what is going on, does anybody have an information or photos of the development

Glad you asked! The marine animal supplier PT Jenggala Bentala Indonesia, who also supplied for a number of Indonesian aquaria such as SeaWorld Ancol, BXSea and Jakarta Aquarium has already started sending animals into the Bali Marine Park!

Notably, one of the shipments meant for Bali Marine Park came from SEA Aquarium Singapore, though it's unclear what fishes are in it but one of the hashtags says "ray".

Fascinating to read about the 2 release projects with Bali mynah (2023-15 around Bali Safari - main island?) and the Papua pig-nosed turtles (2023-280+). Any news on progress and follow-up of the release projects?

Very interested where they received some of their Indonesian / native species received from (on breeding loan?). I mean triton and palm cockatoo, Eclectus Parrot, rhinoceros hornbill and both the binturong (what island from?) and North Sulawesi babirusa?

So far none. I'm not aware if Bali Safari have their own project and/or conservational partner (I.e KASI foundation with Cisarua and Prigen), there might be something related to Bali myna there that I'm not fully aware of. As for the pig-nosed turtle, I recall that they have a massive surplus of this species (A large group even once held in the moat of their Komodo dragon exhibit). So I guess this are related to population control and another collaboration with the BKSDA (Since pig-nosed turtles are quite a common confiscation here).

These are species that they had previously display before the Rainforest Trail was built, surplus animals likely came from the other Safari parks (Mainly Cisarua). I think the binturong there are A. b. penicillatus (Java), which have been bred before in Taman Safari Indonesia. I'm aware of a single North Sulawesi babirusa being born in Bali Safari a few years ago.

@Rizz Carlton, Thank you for your always helpful and informative replies. It really makes the S.E. Asian and Indonesia fora lit up (along with some of the other Indonesian and other nation's Zoochat forum posters. Thank you once more from the heart here (by yours truly)!!!!!

On the North Sulawesi babirusas ..., I think you may be right. I still would love to know what the names and history (sex and age) of the breeding group members are...! I guess they must be related to the Cisarua and Prigen breeding stocks (but who knows ....!).
