Bandung Zoo

I'll try to fix one of my older reply to this thread.

It's not going any better, but atleast much more decent that pre-2017 Bandung Zoo. One of the core problem with Bandung Zoo back then is their sun bears. Yes, they're getting chubbier, but their exhibits have only minimal changes, it's still small and unnatural.

Nope, they don't listen to the public and quote-on-quote "tried their best to change". Who they mostly listen to is PKBSI, who most probably ordered Bandung Zoo to be refurbished because it gained a massive worldwide outcries and they didn't want to seen as a bad institution, Taman Safari Indonesia, who actually did helped the zoo in many ways but not that much, and, since 2019, their sugar daddies Alshad Ahmad and Irfan Hakim.

Even today, I still disagree about the closure of the zoo, since if it was closed, there would be no potential major ex-situ conservation center in Bandung, and worse, it will be replaced by Lembang Park and Zoo as a major zoo in the Bandung region. But, I also disagree about the larger funding of the zoo, I don't think it would significantly helped the modernization of the zoo's exhibits and animal welfare, as well as their conservation program, instead it's probably ended up on "improvement projects" like new wildlife interaction areas and amusement area.

I'm 100% supporting the calls to release some of the animals into the wild, especially local endangered species, although of course still went with appropriate procedures (Rehabilitation program for example).

Well, they should. Since these institutions most definetly going to "try their best" to reform when the outside world began to notice their tomfoolery.

Anyway, Bali Zoo aren't even that great really. Yes, their exhibits are good but not all of them. Moved away from exhibits, this place literally display their Sunda pangolins for people to touch, poke, and play with, meanwhile their exhibits is far from the word decent. It's a miracle that these pangolins remain so long.

I'm not asking now and not going to try to find one myself.

Big nope for this one. Absolutely no new zoos and aquariums in Indonesia since 2019 has been good, let alone great. There's the hell-hole that is Central Park and Zoo, as well as the Coachella of Indonesian zoo, Lembang Park and Zoo. I have a very pessimistic hope for RANS Carnival City Zoo (If you learn more about this upcoming zoo, you learn why) and for BSD City Zoo, which most definetly going to be a clone of Lembang Park and Zoo.

My respond to this:
Yeah, I agree that Bandung Zoo is still as bad as it is, despite in the hands of Taman Safari now, though I'd say there has been some minor progresses such as no more starving sun bears and some of the exhibits looks clean especially the reptile exhibits during my first (and probably last) visit in 2019. Alshad Ahmad should've invested more to make Bandung Zoo even better for the coming future IMO, or probably purchase a minority stake in TSI/Bandung Zoo to help them.

To me, Lembang Park & Zoo is better, but sadly entertainment-focused. During my last visit there, some of the zookeepers told me that they're looking for a mate for their orangutan and sunbear, and not to mention they added a bull Sumatran elephant to the Kampung Gajah exhibit, which are good news. To think LPZ is like the Coachella of zoos in Indonesia.. it's kinda hard to say but, it's pretty famous among YouTubers/influencers including that big jerk Iqbalizda. Heck, even some of the animals there are from influencers too like Hendrico Adrian and Irfan Hakim, so I'll take that as a yes.

As for RANS Carnival City Zoo, I feel this might be an entertainment-focused zoo, which feels like a big NOPE to me, but BSD City Zoo? I still got a hunch it will become Batu Secret Zoo II: The Squeakquel than another clone of LPZ, that is if they still go by their conservation commitments.

Won't improve Bandung Zoo significantly, probably make it worse in some way. You know what's a conservation is to this guy.

The idea of Alshad Ahmad having some control of Taman Safari Indonesia is horrifying.

The reptile zone is indeed quite good, but not that great. Only the planted terrariums, as well as the one with yellow anaconda and Asian water monitor, in the new reptile area I saw quite good. The rest are just your average python enclosures you see in those small Indonesian zoos and mini zoos.

Again, Alshad Ahmad doesn't improve anything. Him being a exotic animals owner doesn't mean he's going to be a good zoo manager, instead he's just going to make another Lembang Park and Zoo, which Bazoga might slowly become in the future. He's also not an Hendrico Andrian if you craved "rare animals", he's zoo collection would just be a larger version of Jakarta Aquarium's safari zone.

Better in term of species, yes. But, like I said, having dozens of rare species doesn't improved a zoo. It's good that they start acquiring mates for their mammals, but I hope they think to start long-term plans for these. Also, I wish they think of starting breeding programs for other species, including birds and by birds I mean not just the birds those rich peoples usually owned but also the others, they have birds-of-paradise and a number of passerines which I don't think have proper, or even any, breeding projects.

Also, their exhibits and setting aren't ground-breaking. Looks like a more expensive version of their Indonesian city zoos counterparts. The reason why I'm still fond of Taman Safari Bogor despite their stupid decisions is not only because of their collection, but also their wonderful rainforest setting and several great natural thematic exhibits, which LPZ barely have any. I don't understand why they think a post-modernist setting and exhibits are great. I'm guess they received "advice" by rich exotic pets owners for their setting and exhibit design, which if they had more money these would definitely be cages for their pets.

If a zoo used influencers and rich exotic animals keepers and suppliers as advisors, then we just wait and see for the result.

BSD City Zoo have great plans, but it's still a plan, a ambitious one. The final result won't be as grand as the plans said even for the next five years depending on the administration.

Some minor updates on Bandung Zoo:
  • The siamang, which enclosure located just after the entrance, now have two co-inhabitants, a family of Asian small-clawed otters and several Malayan porcupines. The otters and porcupines have their own islands, with the latter having two connected islands while the former have access to the water. The siamang also have access to all three islands, but they rarely ventured into the ground (Hmm, I wonder why).
  • A new large, pretty natural exhibit has been constructed in the old reptile complex, which housed a clouded monitor. Additionally, several reptiles has been added as well in the older terrariums in the complex, such as reticulated python, albino Burmese python, Javan spitting cobra, green iguana, and a smaller clouded monitor. Aside from reptiles, the complex also received several additional Sunda leopard cats, occupying two terrariums.
  • The turtle and tortoise complex has been upgraded into a somekind of public park-styled enclosures. The inhabitants are red-eared sliders, Asian forest tortoises, Bornean river turtle, Forsten's tortoise, Amboina box turtles, northern snake-necked turtles, Asian leaf turtles, and a vacant exhibit that previously housed Asiatic softshell turtle.
  • The new reptile complex has seen changes too, with the addition of maned forest lizard and gold-ringed cat snake.
  • An Javan leopard has been added to the lion and tiger complex for some reason, but I know that it is rather unfeasible for the leopard (Pretty much Bazoga's own version of Jakarta Aquarium's serval exhibit).
  • The vacant pond near the alligator gar aquarium has received minor upgrades in the form of a mini waterfall and wooden platform around the side of the pond. The inhabitant(s) are currently unknown.

The zoo's deer complex has received new upgrades, which include feeding platforms and a new addition, Malayan sambars.

Bandung Zoo has also apparently added the West Javan langur, with other primates in the old primate complex.

Bandung Zoo has also added Javan surili into the outdated primate complex. There's also apparently a "new" water monitor exhibit, though it most likely that it was in the original reptile complex, in one of the terrarium previously housing clouded monitor.

I've visited Bandung Zoo today, here's some interesting update:
  • The mixed species near the entrance, which houses a pair of siamang, Asian small-clawed otters, and a group of Malayan porcupines, is under refurbishment. Not sure what this will ended up become later.
  • An new wet-moated exhibit has been built in what used to be an exhibit for horse. It houses the zoo's silvery gibbon along with several Chinese gooses.
  • The zoo has built its own mini zoo, which has baby deers, mini goats, rabbits, Chinese gooses, and others.
  • An Javan surili has been re-added in one of the older primate aviaries, along with an silvery langur.
  • The zoo's BoP (Birds-of-prey) has received major upgrades. The aviaries, which used to be short, now have much more space as the zoo expand them further, now include the space below the aviaries in the back (The aviaries are situated along the hills). Current inhabitants are Javan hawk-eagle, white-bellied sea eagle, brahminy kite, changeable hawk-eagle, and crested serpent eagle.
  • In the zoo's most interesting update, Bandung Zoo has received an Siberian tiger and striped hyena as their newest carnivores. The tiger was housed in an open exhibit previously housing Sumatran tiger. Regarding the hyenas, it was housed in one of the smaller exhibit in the carnivore complex.

So, what carnivores are there in Bandung Zoo now?

Asian small-clawed otters, Javan palm civet, Javan binturong, East African lion, Sunda leopard cat, Siberian and Bengal tiger, Javan leopard, Bornean sun bear, and soon the striped hyena
Thank you so much. I originally thought that there would be a certain proportion of Asian golden cats and Sunda clouded leopards in Indonesian zoos. Unfortunately, the number of these animals is still too small.

That's another Indonesian zoo that houses a hyena. Currently striped hyenas are the most housed ones, with GLZ having spotted hyenas and LPZ having brown hyenas.

Anything about the alligator gar aquarium there?

Pretty much the same as it was with gars, though I noticed an Florida gar so I guess that's somewhat a update. I didn't see the saddled bichir though, but its probably somewhere in parts of the tank that aren't viewable by guests.

I see.. nothing much changed there since my last visit to Bazoga back in 2019 :(

Meerkats are coming to Bazoga soon..
The meerkats will took over the former Asian small-clawed otters exhibit, as the otters will presumebly be housed in the mixed exhibit with siamang and Malayan porcupine from now on. Haven't got any information for their origin, either will they come from nearby zoos like Lembang Park & Zoo or Taman Safari Bogor, or they might be purchased from foreign suppliers.

In an separate news, we do get information about the zoo's Siberian tiger. An male named Kuna was sent by Lembang Park & Zoo alongside an female Bengal tiger on December 2023. Though the addition of this tiger population is nice, the fact that they mentioned the changing focus on breeding from Sumatran tiger to the Bengal tiger and African lion is rather concerning.

Regarding the hyena, it was mentioned that the hyena was one of the animals that had been planned to be acquired in 2023. The origin of the hyena as quoted in the article is vague, I don't 100% sure if it came from Surabaya nor that I'm even sure if they even have them in their collection.

Not so enthousiastic either about the Bengal and Siberian tiger. I would say a bit out of place ....

Excuse me, how many Javan leopards are there in Bandung Zoo now? I heard before that there are more than 10 leopards in the zoo.
