Banham Zoo Banham Zoo News

Well they used to keep hybrids but think they've all died out. I know they received 0:2 from AA but I'm sure they're purebred Reticulated

They have three giraffes there... I believe two are the reticulated ones from AA.

Based on this facebook picture from the zoo I'd say the one on the right isn't reticulated but someone who knows giraffes will be able to say better than me!

Just a note on closures at Banham and Africa alive tomorrow due to the weather forecast expecting to reopen on Friday (from member’s email) in case anyone was planning a visit.

“Due to the yellow weather warning for wind and rain tomorrow, Thursday 2nd November, we have made the difficult decision to close both Banham Zoo and Africa Alive.”

Fiona

It is with great sadness that we announce the loss of our beloved giraffe, Fiona.

Over the past few months, Fiona had been under close observation from our veterinary team. Although our team has effectively managed her health challenges in the past, sadly, this was the right time to say goodbye.

Fiona came to us from Fota Wildlife Park in 2007 and has been a part of Banham Zoo ever since.

Our animal team have said she has been a joy to work with, occasionally revealing her stubborn side to the keepers. However, her calming nature always shone through.

We know that the loss of Fiona will be felt by the team at Banham, our members, visitors and volunteers. We invite you to share any memories you have of Fiona in the comments below.

I hadn’t realised Josie at Dudley was Fiona’s calf. Enjoyed seeing her venturing into their new space at Dudley on my recent visit. A nice legacy.
