Batu Secret Zoo Batu Secret Zoo news

Today, 4 Emperor Tamarins and female of White Faced Saki monkey arrived to Batu from Singapore Zoo. Arrival of Saki male is planed for mid February from zoo in Germany.
Both species will live together in newly renovated exhibit that used to be occupied by Mona monkeys. Batu will send their Mona pair to Dubai - not sure if this will be Dubai Safari or other zoo.
New exhibit looks really nice and good imitates natural tropical forest.
There is plan to get Sloths to this exhibit in next few months and in long term small species of Armadillo or red footed tortoise to live on bottom of this exhibit.

There was several births of Babirusa in Batu. Main problem was that animals was closely related. So why zoo made long time efforts to import new unrelated animals from Surabaya.
I have heard from keepers that within month or two a wild born male will come from Sulawesi. This is confiscated animal from villagers and because he is very tame he can't be released back to forest - it will be very easy target for poachers. If this new male will breed with Batu females this will be great genetic addiction to Babirusa zoo population.

I'm not well informed about Mountain Anoas.
It was happened few years ago.

Do you know if any animals will be transferred to Singapore in exchange?

The babirusa from Surabaya have arrived right? Founder stock Batu from Taman Safari or wild born?
To my very best knowledge, all captive babirusas in zoos around the world derive from Surabaya from animals that was brought from wild in 80's.
I have heard from Batu Zoo's staff that is important for captive population to add more animals from Sulawesi.
It's looks that Batu animal management department working on this and awaiting arrival of new Babirusa from Sulawesi.
Don't know any details about this transfer.

I know that Batu and Singapore have good cooperation in last years. Many rare and interesting animals came to Batu from Singapore ( anteater, giant otters, rhinos, red river hogs, primates and others) and Batu also sent many to Singapore.
I have heard that Brazilian Tapir is planned to be send to Singapore and several birds. But this are not official and not sure if is true.

During last days Batu Zoo and Surabaya Zoo did ,long prepared, transports of many animals.
Batu received from Surabaya following animals:
- 2 males and 6 females of Proboscis Monkeys
- large pair of Komodo Dragons
- pair of Babirusas.
Komodos are visible in their exhibit in Reptile zone and it looks that they adapting fast to their new indoor home.
Proboscis and Babirusas stay in offshow area.
New exhibit for Proboscis will be officially open in early December.

Batu Zoo sent to Surabaya:
- adult female of Rothschild Giraffe to breed with Surabaya's single male.
- pair of Lions
- pair of Racoons
- pair of Ring tail lemurs
- Puma male
- group of Banded mongooses
Some additional transports will take place soon, but I don't know what animals will be transported.
Rothschild's giraffe? Do you know where Batu got its giraffe from?

Yes, correct. Both females that now live in Batu were born in Maharani zoo. Also female that was sent for breeding to Surabaya Zoo in November last year is originally from Maharani.
Batu has some difficulties in getting unrelated male Rothschild/Baringo for breeding with their females. Probably high transport costs from Europe or America is the main issue.

Singapore does need a breeding male Brazilian tapir, so that might be true. Does Batu still have Maleo? I would imagine Singapore wanting this species.

Yes, Batu has 13 or 14 Maleos. Zoo building now off show breeding center for them. Maybe this initiative is in cooperation with Singapore?
From what I've read, it was with BKSDA Palu (It's probably only regarding the care instead of breeding, I don't know), but maybe Singapore also involved?

During today morning visit to Batu Zoo I had chance to see newly arrived male of Saki monkey. Beautiful animal, hopefully he will join female soon.
This male came from my favorite zoo - Leipzig Zoo!!
And there is unconfirmed rumors that Fossas will arrive within few days.

Another international transport arrived to Batu.
Yesterday a Fossa male arrived from Moscow Zoo.
It's pretty unusual ,taking into account current political situation around Russia after their attack on Ukraine.
Next week female from German zoo is expected to arrive.
Both transfers are possible thanks to Batu Zoo participation in Fossa EEP of EAZA.
Hopefully, Batu will be able to breed their pair soon. There is only 2 zoos in Asia that keep this unique carnivore - Singapore and Batu.

Well, Batu wouldn't get any backlash from it since I don't think a lot of people have no idea about this transfer nor pretty much anything else in this thread lmao.

Ueno Zoo in Tokyo also keeps fossas

My apologize, I have checked and in Ueno Zoo lives an old male of Fossa.
Today Batu Zoo received young Fossa female from Frankfurt Zoo.
Second Red tail monkey was born.
New exhibit for Javan Mouse Deers (Kancil Jawa) is under preparation. Pair of this species is supposed to arrive soon from Gembira Loka Zoo.

In an exchange program with Gembira Loka Zoo, Batu Secret Zoo send an female lion named Nada (Born in 2011) and an male wallaby (Possibly agile wallaby) to Yogyakarta. Batu received a pair of Javan mouse-deer and an female proboscis monkey named Uci (Born in 2005). Uci haven't lived in colonies for a while, so both zoos agree to merge Uci with Batu's colony.
