Batu Secret Zoo Batu Secret Zoo news

Normal zoo as in the rest of other Indonesian zoos? I wouldn't say so tbh. Batu still have a number of interesting species only rivaled by Taman Safari Indonesia and maybe Gembira Loka in term of number of them.

The zoo's Sumatran hog badger is still remaining, which is probably the only one in the world to keep one. While Batu itself is currently the only holder of emperor tamarin, white-faced saki, giant anteater, giant otter, black lemur, mantled guereza, rock hyrax, red river hog, Cape ground squirrel, mainland clouded leopard, black-backed jackal, and blesbok in Indonesia.
Some updates regarding Batu Secret zoo's collection and exhibits (April 2024)
  • A group of common marmosets occupy the former Guianan squirrel monkey aviary, as they were moved to the new South American walkthrough aviary called "the Secret of the Amazonian Jungle".
  • An grizzled tree-kangaroo became the zoo's newer resident, occupying a exhibit which used to house the zoo's former bear cuscus.
  • A group of Papuan agile wallaby occupy the former Javan muntjac exhibit.
  • A group of meerkats occupy the former African spurred tortoise exhibit near the binturong and yellow-throated marten exhibit
  • The Secret of the Amazonian Jungle aviary are a rather small and barren aviary which houses a family of South American tapir, as well as a group of Guianan squirrel monkey, white-faced whisting ducks, and innaccurately some red-eared sliders. A sloth (Possibly Linnaeus's two-toed sloth) was supposedly also inside the aviary, though its probably easier to view it during the "VIP tour" (And here I though Taman Safari are more capitalistic lol)
  • An Aldabra giant tortoise were housed together alongside several African spurred tortoises and Patagonian maras in a quite spacious enclosure
  • An Komodo dragon was added as one of the Reptile Garden roster, occupying one of the bigger terrarium. Its possible that this was the originial individual that the zoo keep before the larger Komodo dragons arrived from Surabaya and occupy the main dragon exhibit.
  • A group of yellow-spotted river turtle occupy the former green anaconda exhibit.
  • The former Papuan agile wallaby was revamped into a false gharial exhibit complete with waterfall. A couple of gharial used to be displayed in the now proboscis monkey and glossy ibis aviary, where its possible to view these gharials underwater.
  • The lone red-bellied piranha in the zoo's Fantastic Aquarium was moved to a smaller tank for some reason and their tank are instead occupied by assorted tetras.
  • The zoo's aquarium also seemed to hold several interesting species, which include papyrocranus afer, arothon nigropunctatus, and gymnothorax fimbriatus.
  • In what currently is my most favorite addition, a new frog and toad zone has been added, taking some parts of the reptile section of the Fantastic Aquarium. The species hosted there include Rio Azuela glass frog, harlequin tree frog, Indonesian bubble-nest frog, Sumatran tree toad, cross toad, and pearly tree frog all in a decent terrarium. Aside from Asian horned frog and several other terrrariums that will come, its not confirmed wether the zoo's mossy frog and mission golden-eyed tree frog will also be exhibited here too.
  • An turqoise monitor has been added as part of the zoo's already interesting varanid collection.
  • The turtle section received some minor updates, now only consisting four medium to small-sized exhibits. The first exhibit houses a pair of alligator snapping turtle, the second houses an matamata, the third houses an common snapping turtle, while a new exhibit houses a couple of unidentified snake-necked turtles (Though the zoo did previously display an New Guinea snake-necked turtle).
  • An spotted hyena has occupy the former cougar exhibit, becoming one of the two only Indonesian zoo to keep this species of hyena, the other being Gembira Loka. Its possible that both zoo's spotted hyenas were acquired and arrived at the same time, though we do know more about Gembira Loka (two pairs imported from Africa), we barely have any information on what seemed to be the zoo's lone hyena.
  • A group of silver pheasants seems to be temporarily added in the future red panda exhibit.

Are there still bear cuscus in the zoo?

I don't assume otter civet are very easy to track down and photograph in natural situation ...

But call me crazy ...

But I think for an endangered species their look is easily marketable. Could become aye-aye popular in zoos somehow I think.

The otter civet at Batu was a seized animal, that's how they got it.
If they were to get more they'd probably be wild caught, which isn't a good look for the zoo though I don't know how much that would be an issue regionally

It's an EDGE species and an endangered species to boot . . . so I don't see why not.
And I think for the more commercial directors its appearance could easily make them interested

I still don't get your point
Even if you were suggesting to capture some, good luck finding all genetically distinct animals in the heart of the Indonesian jungle, easier said than done:p

According to the Zootierliste, Batu now has hairy-nosed otter. Is there more information about it? Really hope the hairy-nosed otter is on display after the otter civet left.:)
Not much sources were given in the site aside from being seen by the author. Its probably a confiscated species before being sent to the zoo, like most of Batu's more interesting native small mammals.

AFAIK only Lembang Park and Zoo has a hairy-nosed otter. The ones in TSI are mislabeled smooth-coated otters.

Unfortunately, the Sulawesi dwarf cuscus (Strigocuscus celebensis) passed away last month. Its exhibit remains empty for now.

A decent replacement popped up on the other side of the pathway, where I noticed an enclosure for tarsiers. Upon closer inspection, I saw three animals. The sign is a mess and labels the wrong species. The species exhibited is the Horsfeld's tarsier (Cephalopachus bancanus), which has previously been held in a few parks across Indonesia. As of now, Batu is the only park with this species visible for public.

Thank you for your guys’ information. So, I didn’t visit the Drive Thru Park yesterday. Even though I didn’t see the hairy-nosed otter, the zoo is still amazing!
In the Nocturnal House, I saw these animals in flesh.
  • Sugar glider
  • Chinchilla
  • Javan ferret badger(Melogale orientalis)
  • Spectral Tarsier
  • Common striped possum (Dactylopsila trivirgata)
  • Kinkajou
And these animals’ exhibitions are still there:
  • Brushtail possum
  • Javan Slow Loris (Nycticebus javanicus
  • Common spotted cuscus (Spilocuscus maculatus)
  • Sulawesi dwarf cuscus (Strigocuscus celebensis)
  • Sunda pangolin

I can confirm that the brushtail possums, spotted cuscus and Sunda pangolin are still alive. I only missed the Javan slow loris, although I barely looked for it. As stated before, the tarsiers are not spectral tarsiers.

We must have missed each other then! Me and Sicarius were there until noon. I'll be uploading some pictures confirming the spotted cuscus and pangolin, but yes the brushtail possum is also still alive.

I'll also mention that the Amphibian area needs updated signage with a lot of animals missing and exhibits containing different species.

The Red Panda has arrived and has been on display for a while now. Today is the first day it has been given access to its outdoor enclosure filled with tall trees.

More updates soon
Next month, the male Chinese red panda, Fujimaru, from Tama Zoo will be moving to Batu Secret Zoo. Batu Secret Zoo had applied to join JAZA's Chinese red panda breeding program last year, so they might already be officially participating.
