When I went to Batu back in 2014, I stopped at Surabaya and continued to Batu by bus. It was a long trip, and never realized Malang had a train station.
 
I uploaded a comprehensive set of approximately 350 photos into the gallery, including around 80 photos of the Museum. That building could easily be a separate attraction on its own and it's full of interesting taxidermy dioramas. Batu Secret Zoo has a massive collection, with around 70+ mammal species and that includes 30 on-show primate species. I didn't go behind the scenes here, but I know that there's at least another dozen primate species off-show, plus this place has a Nocturnal House, Reptile House and Aquarium. I toured the zoo with @twilighter and we spent so long here seeing everything, partly on a guided tour, plus we had Eco Green Park next door, and so the only thing we missed was the 20-minute safari area in Batu Secret Zoo. It was a packed day and we had to catch a bus for Surakarta afterwards. :)

Fujimaru has arrived in Batu Secret Zoo! He appeared to still be under habituation period judging from the post linked below. Hopefully a female Chinese red panda come later.

An male reticulated giraffe, named Julang, has arrived to Batu from Ragunan Zoo. Julang was born in 2020, from a parent that was originated from Taronga Zoo in 2018.

They had plan for Julang to be breed with the zoo's female Natalia (6 Yo) and Kindi (4,5 Yo), though this seems to be concerning with the risk of hybridization since Batu's original giraffes are all presumebly Rothschild's.

LPZ could have gotten a giraffe from Ragunan but they chose the hard way. Good luck with the CITES license/permit! :D

There are no Reticulated Giraffes in Australia. It may be a typo for Rothschild's Giraffe, but coming from Taronga it would have been a generic (hybrid) animal anyway.

Is it possible they're using common animals like Giraffes and Zebras to test the waters and the goal of eventually transferring more valuable animals to Indonesia?

Without more information I don't think we can judge how well the rationale is. As odd as LPZ is, I don't think they'd waste money transferring animals from vastly farther sources without good reason.

Why would they really want to get these animals to that extend is something to be questioned too, especially since there's already local suppliers who already succesfuly bred them.

They had been numerous imports from Africa to Indonesia, including the spotted hyena and lesser flamingo in Gembira Loka. Lembang as well imported their carnivoras like brown hyena, and cheetah presumebly from South African farms. I do wish seeing them diverted to a more credible zoo, but sadly its unlikely with recent news of the zebra arriving.

From what I heard during my recent visit the LPZ, the zebras and the antelopes are arriving first before the rhinos and giraffe. And it did, well for the zebras.
 
The zoo's tufted capuchin family has received a new aviary, which is an heavily refurbished former-rhinoceros hornbill aviary, along with wired bridges for the capuchins above the guest pathway. Additionaly, an baby has been born as well.

Before this, the capuchins are only viewable through the wired overhead bridges that went above the giant otter exhibit. Before the otters, the capuchin had their own exhibit in the monkey complex.

Its possible that the already established population in some Indonesian zoos are likely to already be non-pure or hybridized, intentionally or unintentionally. Batu somewhat have a strict policy of not to breed hybrids (Likely a rather new policy, as they still have several farm-bred tigers for a long-time).

Batu's older giraffes are Rothschild's. I'm not really sure of the (sub)species of the two giraffes that had come from Japan (I guess @Veno would know?) and the also recently-acquired male giraffe from Ragunan Zoo in Jakarta (Who's parents are originated from Taronga Zoo) are likely to be hybrid, as stated by @Chlidonias. Honestly, I'm not sure on what they will be planning with their giraffes.

I wonder whats that "special interest" is, a very interesting choice of taxa. They already have the original brown bear pair Apollon & Diana (Unspecified subspecies), I wonder whats Batu's plan for their brown bears are.
