Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary Bay Beach Sanctuary News

Updates from today:

  • For the first time in over a year, the sanctuary is completely open!
  • The free-flight waterfowl aviary was open as well, but a lot of species were gone. Currently present are: Snow Goose, Northern Pintail, Blue-winged Teal, and Redhead.
  • A Western Hognose has replaced the Corn Snake in the Observation Building.
  • The crow is gone from the observation building, in its place is a new exhibit (much worse than the old one) for Common Tern.
  • The previously temporary exhibit for Tundra Swan in the observation building seems to be permanent.
  • Lots of changes within the Observation Building aviaries, I made a post in the species list thread so you can see what's come and gone.
  • There's brand new signage in the Woodland Building. What was previously listed as White-footed Mouse is now listed as North American Deer Mouse; this is probably the correct identification.
  • BBWS appears to be down to one mink now, not sure if that's actually new or if I just hadn't noticed it before.
  • The Cougar may no longer be present, the Cougar viewing area was blocked off and the exhibit appeared to be empty.

Updates from my visit today:
  • Nearly all of the previously missing birds were back in their exhibits in the Observation Building and free-flight cage on the Raptor Trail.
  • The Cougar is still present but not on exhibit due to “structural reasons”.
  • There was construction going on in the deer/crane yard.
  • The flying squirrels were all super active.

Updates from today:
  • The Eastern Screech-Owl from the Observation Building was moved to the exhibit on the Raptor Trail.
  • The Common Tern was moved to the Wetland Aviary.
  • A Mourning Dove was born.
  • The Red-bellied Woodpeckers appear to be nesting.
  • The swallow exhibit is back in the Observation Building.
  • A Blue Jay is now on exhibit in the Observation Building, He is tethered to a post.
  • The nuthatch appears to be gone.
  • The Cougar is back on exhibit, though there is now an additional barrier between the visitors and the glass viewing area.
  • The species in the rehab room were American Robin, Downy Woodpecker, Blue Jay, and Pileated Woodpecker.

Updates from today:

  • The Snowy Owl exhibit is being renovated.
  • The swans are back to free-roaming.
  • Corn Snake has replaced Western Hognose in the Observation Building.
  • The Black-crowned Night-Heron now has its own exhibit in the Observation Building.
  • More climbing frames have been added to the porcupine exhibit, the porcupine was running around and calling like crazy.
  • The American Crow has moved back into the porcupine exhibit.
  • According to a sign, the turtle exhibit in the Woodland Building will be renovated soon.

Updates from today:
  • Corn Snake has replaced Western Hognose in the Observation Building.
  • The Black-crowned Night-Heron now has its own exhibit in the Observation Building.
Typically, the hognose and corn snake rotate time in the exhibit.
Where in the building is the night heron exhibit? Does he have the wetland exhibit to himself?

The mink are now gone and their exhibit is being renovated. The Corn Snake is back in the terrarium, so I guess they are indeed rotating.

A House Finch is now on-exhibit in the Grassland Aviary. The Yellow-bellied Sapsucker has moved to the Woodland Aviary.

Hairy Woodpecker and Northern Cardinal are new additions to the Woodland Aviary. A Blue Jay has been added to the Prairie Aviary.

An American Toad is now on exhibit in a new terrarium in the Rehab Room in the Observation Building, this is probably temporary until spring.

BBWS recently obtained two Northern Mockingbirds that were confiscated illegal pets. One is currently visible in the Rehab Room.

Updates from today:

  • The Common Garter Snake exhibit was empty.
  • One of the mockingbirds has moved into the prairie aviary.
  • There's a Pileated Woodpecker bts in the Observation Building, I could hear it calling. No idea if it's a temporary rehab bird or a permanent resident.
  • There was a Feral Pigeon in the rehab room.

Interesting, which calls? I find myself confusing the long calls of Pileated and flicker. The "wuk" notes are a bit more distinctive to me at least.

Very loud “wuk”s coming from the back room.

I’m not sure what you’re asking here.

You said the exhibit now is much worse than the older one. the way you phrased it, it sounded like the tern exhibit is worse than the crow exhibit. I just wanted to know like what changes were made to make it worse.

The new tern exhibit is much worse than the old tern exhibit. The Common Tern had moved from the large wetland aviary to a tiny birdcage. I haven’t seen the Common Tern for a while now though, not sure if it’s bts or gone.

The wildlife sanctuary rotates a lot of birds around; especially between the Shore exhibit and behind the scenes areas. Certain birds need more care than others so many animals go out on exhibit during the day and get brought behind the scenes overnight, or rotate days on exhibit/behind the scenes with other birds.
There is a pileated woodpecker that lives behind the scenes.

Updates from my visit on Saturday:

-The exhibits for Cooper's Hawk and Northern Saw-whet Owl were both empty and had the signs removed. I can confirm they still have a saw-whet bts, no idea on the status of the Cooper's Hawk.
-Bay Beach recently obtained two Barn Owls which will go on-exhibit later this year. Currently they are being used as animal ambassadors.
-Two Striped Skunks have moved into the old mink exhibit.
-Several of the bird cages in the Resch Wing were gone.
-The Common Garter Snake has been replaced by an American Bullfrog.

Updates from today:

-There is a new exhibit for the saw-whet owl in the Resch Wing.
-The Eastern Bluebirds have been moved to the Woodland Aviary.
-A male Northern Cardinal has been added to the Woodland Aviary.
-The Common Tern is back on-exhibit.
-The California Kingsnake has a brand new exhibit in the Resch Wing, its old exhibit stands empty.
-The turtle exhibit in the Woodland Building was empty.

The sanctuary announced last week that Bob, the male bobcat, has passed away.
Bob came to the sanctuary in 2004 at 1 year old from being an illegal pet in Missouri.
