Updates from my visit today:

  • The Raptor Trail has re-opened.
  • There's a new (female) Snowy Owl on exhibit. Not sure where the male who previously inhabited the exhibit is.
  • The kite was in the rehab room for some reason.
  • The Long-eared Owls were off-exhibit with their sign removed, but given that many of the Raptor Trail signs have been removed with inhabitants that doesn't necessarily mean they are gone.
  • The Cooper's Hawk and saw-whet owl enclosures remain empty.
  • The Waterfowl Aviary is closed and empty.
  • Two tiny, fluffy Red-tailed Hawk chicks have hatched!
  • The Resch Wings was closed, apparently for an event.
  • The White's Tree Frog and Common Leopard Gecko appear to be gone.
  • The Bullsnake was off-exhibit, can confirm it is still present bts.
  • The hedgehog exhibit in the Nature Center is now home to some Fancy Mice.
  • The gift shop has been removed, for some reason.
  • There is now a taxidermy two-headed cow in the Nature Center.
 
Updates from today:

  • Sadly, I believe the Long-eared Owls and White-tailed Kite are gone permanently.
  • The Resch Wing has re-opened. The species lineup is mostly the same, although there have been a few species that have left, and some of the birds changed enclosures.
  • An African Spurred Tortoise has moved into the Greenhouse Aviary.
  • The Painted Ladies appear to be permanently gone.
  • The Eastern Chipmunk appears to be gone permanently.
 
Updates from today:

-There's a new Red Fox being introduced to the enclosure.
-There's also a new chipmunk.
-The Barn Owl has moved into the former Long-eared Owl exhibit
-A Broad-winged Hawk has moved into the former White-tailed Kite exhibit.
-The Waterfowl Aviary is still closed but there are animals in it once again - there were perhaps 40 Canada Geese crowded in. I don't know why they have so many geese suddenly.
-The Snowy Owls were hooting.
-Most of the woodland birds have moved into the Prairie Aviary for some reason.
-The Common Garter Snake has been replaced by a Spiny Softshell Turtle.
 
Updates from my visit today:
  • Bay Beach just got a new Gray Fox (that's a brand new species), it is currently living with the Red Foxes.
  • The Eastern Deer Mouse exhibit was darkened but there's still animals in it (I only know this because the wheel was spinning).
  • The Cougar was super active!
  • The Common Leopard Gecko exhibit was empty with a "new exhibit coming soon" sign.
  • The Waterfowl Aviary is empty again.
  • There's a new Bonaparte's Gull in the Beach Aviary. The terns are also on exhibit again.
  • There were three very cute baby Virginia Opossums in the rehab room, as well as a Monarch and a Ruby-throated Hummingbird.
  • A Lapland Longspur now resides in the Forest Aviary! How many other places keep this species?
  • The Cooper's Hawk has returned to its enclosure.
  • A Sandhill Crane has hatched.
 
Other 2022 News:

On June 30th, the sanctuary announced they acquired a (2.0) red fox named Archie and Scout which are now on exhibit.

On July 25th, the sanctuary announced they renovated the main entrance, removing the fencing and replacing it with large stones.

On August 25th, the sanctuary announced that, in partnership with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, released (0.0.37) Canadian geese and a (0.0.1) mallard into the L.H. Barkhausen Waterfowl Preserve in Wisconsin after suffering from a substance spill.

*Misc News: They rehabilitated and released various species back into the wild over the course of 2022. In February, the sanctuary created a mascot, Wilder the Goose.
 
Updates from my visit today:

-Two Broad-winged Hawks are now living in the old saw-whet owl exhibit. Apparently they can live outdoors in winter in this enclosure? Not sure why.
-The Waterfowl Aviary is still closed, and contained only the Snow Goose, although Tundra Swan was also signed.
-The Resch Wing was closed for some reason.
-I saw an obviously sick wild Canada Goose wandering the grounds. I'm no wildlife disease expert but the symptoms appeared similar to HPAI.
-The turtle exhibit in the Woodland Building has finally re-opened. I saw Common Map Turtle and Yellow-bellied Slider in it, Painted Turtle was also signed but did not appear to be present.
-Forgot to note this when I visited a few weeks ago, but the Lapland Longspur is no longer on exhibit. No idea what happened to it.
 
Updates from today:

-A few of the raptors have been switched around. The Broad-winged Hawks have moved to where to the Short-eared Owls were, the Short-eareds have moved to the the previously vacant former kite enclosure, and the Snowy Owls have been separated into the former saw-whet owl aviary.
-The waterfowl aviary, while still containing a Snow Goose, was filled with live traps. Most were empty but one had at least 5 Brown Rats in it. Apparently Bay Beach is having a rat issue, which isn't exactly surprising.
-The turtle tank in the Woodland Building was empty again for some reason.
 
On April 9th, the sanctuary announced they acquired a (1.0) domestic rabbit named Chester in the summer of 2022 which is now an ambassador animal.

On February 6th, the sanctuary announced they purchased a carport which was transformed into outdoor caging for rehabilitation patients.

On April 8th, the sanctuary announced that a (1.0) grey wolf named Tundra passed away at age 10 due to cancer.

Updates from my visit today:
  • The Broad-winged Hawks have been moved back into their old enclosure.
  • An American Crow is now living in the old Short-eared Owl exhibit.
  • The Snowy Owl that was in the old saw-whet owl exhibit has moved back in with the other, the old saw-whet owl exhibit is once again empty.
  • The aviaries in the Resch Wing are currently under renovation, and all the species there were off-exhibit.
  • Painted Turtle and Common Snapping Turtle have returned to the turtle exhibit.
  • The Waterfowl Aviary has added an American Wigeon and an unsigned Gadwall.
 
Updates from today:
  • The Waterfowl aviary is once again empty.
  • The former outdoor saw-whet owl exhibit (the one noted as holding a Snowy Owl in the post above) is once again empty.
  • The former Short-eared Owl exhibit (noted as holding an American Crow above) is now home to 2 Northern Mockingbirds.
  • The American Bullfrog exhibit has been expanded to cover the area of the now former Spiny Softshell exhibit.
  • The aviaries in the Resch Wing have animals in them again, although the lineup has changed a bit (*=new species for the collection):

Updates from my visit today:

  • The goshawk enclosure was empty and the sign has been removed.
  • The chipmunk enclosure was empty and cleared out, but the sign is still up, so it may return.
  • The White-tailed Deer/Sandhill Crane viewing area has been completely removed, including the lookout tower.
