Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo Beardsley Zoo News 2023

Does anyone know when the new bear exhibit is opening to the public? I tried to look into it online but couldn’t find any details on the zoo website.

To my surprise I was lucky enough to see Cayembe out on exhibit where she was given the choice of indoor and outdoor. The zoo staff said she is being given the chance to explore her habitat and get acclimated where she feels most comfortable whether it be inside or outside. They said they are doing a soft opening so that she isn’t scared when the grand opening of the exhibit happens in May.

Cayenne should be returning to Cleveland in the coming weeks as their tropical Bear complex is nearing completion.

I was told last week by Cleveland Zoo that the tropical bears would be returning in early June for a mid June/early July opening for Bear Hollow
Has it been specified that *this specific bear* is returning to Cleveland, or just that the *species* is returning? It seems like a really strange choice to unnecessarily move an elderly animal over 500 miles for only a few months, just to move it back where it came from, especially when there are a number of younger andean bears that would be prime choices for Cleveland. That's not even taking into account that Beardsley also has a new exhibit for the bears, so it'd be strange for them to take in a bear scheduled to leave so soon after the exhibit opens.

Andean bear habitat opens:

The habitat can accomodate 4-5 bears:

Andean bear Cayambe wandered through the habitat and, at one point, came right up to the viewing window, to the delight of the guests.

The habitat has space for four to five bears eventually, along with a maternity room and nursery with heated floors.
