Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo Beardsley Zoo News 2023

For all the fuss and palaver over nothing you would have thought they could have gotten the correct nomenclature in the newspaper article...all generic names should be capitalised of course i.e. Archimandrita tessellata..but not the binomial(as is often incorrectly done). They aren`t Latin names either,rather latinised - scientific name is more accurate.
 
Heartbreaking news. Pipoca ("Pip"), the female Brazilian ocelot, passed away yesterday due to complications from surgery for artificial insemination. I remember her as a kitten at the Los Angeles Zoo. Rest in peace, Pipoca 3/13/18-8/17/23.

Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo on Instagram: "Our hearts are saddened today by the loss of Pipoca, our Brazilian ocelot, following reproductive surgery. Pip died yesterday due to complications from surgery for a long-planned artificial insemination. AI has proven to be an effective way to safeguard the species from extinction and has resulted in many additional births. Four veterinarians were on hand for this important procedure as part of the AZA’s Brazilian Ocelot Species Survival Plan (SSP), including Dr William F. Swanson, director of Animal Research at the Cincinnati Zoo. There are currently 35 Brazilian ocelots in human care at AZA facilities. Forty percent of those cats were born from artificial insemination or are the offspring of parents produced by artificial insemination. The Zoo has had previous successful artificial insemination procedures. The Zoo’s Brazilian ocelot Kuma gave birth twice after undergoing an AI procedure, and her female offspring have given birth themselves, resulting in multiple generations. “Pipoca’s passing is a significant and difficult loss for the Zoo family,” said Zoo Director Gregg Dancho. “This was an important undertaking in spite of the heartbreaking loss.” Photo by Jack Bradley"

Amur Tiger Changbai will be sent away soon as construction on the new tiger complex is about to begin:

Architect’s renderings are finalized, and the next step is demolition of the existing facility, followed by construction of the new indoor holding area. The new building will be double in size, with maternity and neo-natal spaces, a kitchen, and animal care areas. We’re excited to begin this two-phase, multi-year project.
