Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo Beardsley Zoo News

The 90 Days of Summer promotions are over. I haven't been on in a while, so really, they ended on Tuesday, not today.:o

There is no official departure date for the tortoises, so it's better to come down sooner than later to see Professor and Skipper's last days at Beardsley!
Just some thoughts on the renovation of the old bear exhibit:
Amur Leopards, as you know, have been chosen to be the species to be put in the old Andean Bear exhibit. The zoo mainly considered 4 species; Amur Leopards, Snow Leopards, Red Pandas, and Wolverines.
Best Fit For The Exhibit: Red Pandas would have probably been the best fit for the old bear exhibits as they would get a good amount of space.
Worst Fit For The Exhibit: Snow Leopards would probably have been the worst decision, as they need vertically tall exhibits and lots of rockwork, and finances would probably just not allow that.
Best Fit for The Exhibit From a Conservation Standpoint: Amur Leopards are definately the best fit for the exhibit from a conservation standpoint, as Amur Leopards are one of the rarest mammals on the planet.
Best Fit For the Exhibit From a ZooChatter's Perspective: Probably Wolverine. There's not many Wolverines in US zoos, so they would be nice additions, plus they'd get a good amount of space.
However, the Amurs have been chosen to be the new species, and as a wild cat fan, I'm pretty excited. Hopefully the exhibit will be decent.

Wolverines sure as H*ll would've been nice, though.

Wouldn't they? At least Beardsley will acquire an animal that is beautiful, majestic, and critically endangered. In addition, the bear exhibits will hopefully be turned into a modern leopard exhibit, another Asian species will be acquired since they only have 3 species (Amur Tigers, Indian Peafowl are free-roaming, and Koi Fish are on display in Greenhouse. Leopards will also bring in some visitors which means more $$$ for Beardsley. I'm going to try to keep speculation to a minimum, but I feel at least one leopard will be from San Diego's young trio.

Skipper and Professor leave on Monday for Cameron Park Zoo, their original home.:(
Some news from Facebook:
Check it out! Google was here mapping our zoo so that everyone can take a virtual tour of Connecticut's only zoo. Of course it's not the same as being here .. but it's still pretty cool! It takes a few months to put the whole thing together but we'll let you know when it goes live on Google Maps.

It's been an exciting summer for Beardsley, with many new animal additions and depatures. An article explains some of the new animals welcomed this summer, and the ones that have left.
Additions:
2 Giant Tortoises- Skipper and Professor were 2 Giant Tortoises brought to Beardsley for their 90th anniversary. They will leave on Monday.
1 North American River Otter- Necedah, a female River Otter, was brought to the zoo this summer to breed with the male otter, Rizzo, since his former mate died.
2 Gray Foxes- An unrelated male/female pair of Gray Foxes went on exhibit in the former Red Fox exhibit in June.
1 Chacoan Peccary- A female peccary was brought to Beardsley for breeding purposes.
2 Agoutis- Finally! Agoutis have returned to the zoo!
Departures:
1 Pronghorn- Apparantely, the female born in June was transferred to the Metro Richmond Zoo. A shame that I never saw her.
1 Brazilian Ocelot- Alya, a historic ocelot, was transferred to Buffalo Zoo to breed.
2 Gray Wolves- Apache, the male, passed away in July. I just found out today that on September 10th, the female, Cheyenne passed away too.:( This means the Gray Wolf exhibit is empty, and they might find Gray Wolves from another place.
1 Andean Bear- Joaquin a male bear left for the Good Zoo in May.
But read the article for more info! Giant Tortoises Head to Texas on Monday; Zoo Welcomes Otter, Foxes, and More

Anaheim, you better get your butt down tomorrow to see those tortoises!:D
Okay, serious time. Now that the Gray Wolf enclosure is empty, I'm seriously wondering what they're going to do with it. They probably won't put Coyotes in it, as the exhibit is called WOLF (Wolf Observation Learning Faculty), so Coyotes would mess things up. Perhaps they'll try to get Mexican Gray Wolves to bring in a new SSP animal. Or they'll get some more Timber Wolves from another source. Are any zoos out there phasing out Timber Wolves? Also, I'm wondering what they're going to do with the tortoise enclosure now that the tortoises are leaving. A worker told me that they'd definately like to put something in there, as they put a lot of effort in constructing that exhibit in 1 week. However, I'm not sure what could be held in there without escaping. Capybara or Patagonian Cavies perhaps? I also heard that if the tortoises were popular, they might look into getting a permanent tortoise exhibit. However, now that the weather is cooling down and autumn has begun, nothing will probably go in there until spring. Also, the agoutis are on display in the free-flight aviary.

A friend of mine went to the zoo over the weekend. She says the Gray Wolf enclosure is still empty, but construction is going well inside the old Andean Bear exhibits. The zoo estimates the leopards will arrive in late fall or early winter. In addition, she says Beeze is sometimes out on zoo grounds, training to get accustomed to the public.

I messaged the zoo on Facebook asking about plans for the Gray Wolf exhibit and Giant Tortoise exhibit, and this is their response;
Thanks for getting in touch! We are looking for some Grey Wolves for the Wolf Den. This may take some time so stay tuned. We are also looking to see what other animals could go where the giant tortoises were.

Betsy recently posted on the San Diego Zoo news thread that it appears that San Diego will be getting rid of their female Amur leopard and keeping their males. Could she possibly end up at Beardsley, or is it too early to speculate?

Nothing is sure yet, but it might be possible. The zoo told me in a Facebook message that they weren't quite ready to share specific details about the old bear exhibits or Pampas Plains yet, so we'll just have to find out, possibly by late fall at the earliest.

Hey this is my first post on ZooChat:D
I would like to thank BeardsleyZooFan for all the helpful info about the Beardsley Zoo. Living in Connecticut myself it's great to know that our little zoo is finally getting some of the expansions it deserves (although i think it sould focus on renovating some of its current exhibits first). If you, BZF, or anyone else can tell me what other new things have happened to the Maritime Aquarium besides the Lemon Sharks and Shark Touch Pool during the FINtastic RefurbFISHment it would be greatly appreciated.

I recently visited the Smithsonian National Zoo, ZooAmerica, and Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo so I should have pics up soon.

P.S. can anyon tell me how to post a profile pic?

Well, welcome to the forum, ThylacineAlive! Good to have another Connecticut resident on board (so far I only know three others besides myself)! Hope you enjoy your time on the forum.

To post a profile picture, click on the "Tools" tab at the top of the page and select "Edit Avatar". From here, you can either copy and paste a link of the picture or select the image from your computer's pictures.

Once again, welcome!

Thank You:)
I look forward to joining the conversations of this website and adding my support and pictures when I can. I may be going to the Central Park Zoo next week or the week after so those pics may be up first.

Ah, nice! Well, I'm off to the Bronx Zoo tomorrow - it's going to be gorgeous tomorrow, as well. I'm not sure that I'll post pictures - 90% of my uploaded pictures are from the Bronx Zoo; no one needs to see more of the same from me. :D Enjoy your next zoo visit!

Thank you! I've been to the Bronx Zoo three times in 2011 (no times in 2012) and i have a list of species i've seen there. it's pretty large so if you want to see it I'll post the link to my website (although i didn't have my camera yet so none of the pics are mine but i mention the sites they came from)

By the way, is it possible that the Amur Leopard rumored to be coming to the Beardsley Zoo be coming from the Exotic Feline Breeding Compound since, I believe, they have the largest number of Amur Leopards in the country and many zoos and institutions get their big cats from there.

Well, first off, I'd like to say welcome aboard ThylacineAlive! It's great to have another member from Connecticut, and I hope ZooChat will be a rewarding experience for you.:)
The Fintastic Refurbishment included new lighting, new animals and exhibits, a new seal show, the Shark Touch Tank, more interactive displays, and more. I went about a month and a half ago to Maritime for the first time since the refurbishment, and I must say the aquarium looks much better. It's still not in the same league as Mystic, but Maritime has definately improved. Here's a press release; http://www.maritimeaquarium.org/images/stories/Aquar.RefurbFISHment.pdf
As for where the leopards are to be sourced from, I honestly have no clue, and I'd like to keep the speculation to a minimum. ThylacineAlive, I'm also quite jealous you got to visit Smithsonian recently, which is on my list of zoos to do next year. What were your thoughts on the establishment?
AnaheimZoo- Jeez, how come you get to visit one of the top zoos in the country like twenty times a year?:p I'm just joking, and my frequent Beardsley visits help me appreciate my Bronx visits. In fact, I'm planning to go in November, but I honestly just want to get down there before the tiger cubs are all grown up! And by the way, if you do take pictures, I'd appreciate photos of the cubs if it's not too much. Thanks.:)

My thoughts on the National Zoo? I thought it was fantastic!:)
I mean, it might have been a little more special for me then most because I was born and lived in a building 5mins away from there so it was officialy the first zoo I ever visited and started my love of wildlife. When I went, it was a hot, hot day so somethings weren't out like the Celebes Crested Macaques:(. Also, the American Trail exhibit had not opened yet so I didn't get to see those animals either (althought you could hear the sea lions if you were near the Mongoilan Wild Horses). I did see the elephant even though that part is still under construction but I didn't see the Japanese Giant Salamander that's supposed to be on Asia Trail. Where is it? I glimpsed one in the Reptile House though. Also, a couple outdoor bird exhibits were closed, so were the Soccoro Dove, Guam Kingfisher, Guam Rail, and North Island Brown Kiwi exhibits (although the kingfishers and dove were still out and i saw some keepers training one of the newborn kiwis). The exhibits were amazing (a few dull exhibits inside the buildings here and there) and designed to recreate each species natural habitat. The Komodo Dragon exhibit was a little on the small side and i wasn't overly impressed with the Sumatran Tiger and Barbary Lion exhibits. I suggest making sure you see Asia Trail (especially the pandas), Cheetah Reserve, and the Rainforest building (not as great of the Bronx Zoo's but still a top notch exhibit).
Sorry for rambling about not seeing things, those exhibits should all be open by now.:o

Thanks for your thoughts on Smithsonian, and I hope to see it next year perhaps. I don't mean to bombard you with reviews, but as a Connecticut resident, and the fact that we're posting under the Beardsley Zoo forum, what are your thoughts on Connecticut's Only Zoo?
