Just a quick update! We have had a very busy week at the zoo so far. Unfortunately vandals burnt down our mountain tea house at the top of the zoo which is really sad as it had such a nice atmosphere up overlooking the whole zoo beside the vicugnas!

Good news however has come in the form of another female malayan tapir calf and our first zebra foal born in a long time at the zoo!

Our newly arrived pair of belted ruffed lemurs have been mixed with our three male crowned lemurs and pair of red bellied lemurs! :)

Other births and hatches include three californian sealions, socorro dove chick and white-browed coucal chick!

Our tree kangaroo house is nearing completion so hopefully she will be on show in the next few weeks!:)

Has it been decided what species of tiger will replace Jack the white bengal?

No decision has been made yet im afraid, we will just have to watch this space! :)

In my opinion it is indeed a nice collection but I am naturally biased!

Is Boulas the male Gorilla still there? Any news on exchanges in the Gorilla group to promote some breeding?

Yes plans are very close but I cant say where animals are moving or coming from im afraid!

I am sad to report the death of the baby gibbon after a short illness, keepers did al they good to help the little one but it was not to be.

Lilly the 'Barbary' lion will be leaving the collection this week bound for the Checz republic, leaving the 'tiger' enclosure vacant pending new arrivals in the future, watch this space for more information!

Belfast zoo held its first roar & snoar last night, camping within the zoo grounds a night time tour and extras, despite the weather it was a success, more will surely follow :-)

Aww I saw it a fortnight ago and was (and still) very proud of the group. One of them did a very stylish back flip and landed on the glass of the exhibit but it seemed to be flukey cause he looked rather relieved that he had recovered from it:p

It was also nice to see the Coatis in their exhibit (finally:D) and the new Capybara! Unfortunatly no sign of the anteater.

Also Al can I ask, have any of the keepers spotted a prarie dog in with the flamingos? Not sure if they are supposed to be in their

Was surprised to see the other 2 elephants at the zoo now we've got 4 old females!:D

My visit was during the bird of prey display and found the barn owl cute and hilarious. It just wouldn't shut up:p
Also I was a bit disgruntled when I learnt I wasn't old enough for the sleepover at the zoo:mad:

Also any news on the species that only one other zoo outside Asia has yet?

Sad news on the baby gibbon.

Marwell Dalek, are you suggesting they place Grizzled Leaf Monkey's in the vacant "tiger" enclosure?

I was just thinking up possibilities that relate to 'Kept in only one zoo outside Asia', wasn't making a serious claim. Just part of the guessing game, like the one in the 'Mystery Ungulate' thread.

Am confused, where is "Kept in only one zoo outside Aisa" mentioned?

It was one of Al's updates in another thread where he listed the Anteater, Capybara, Crowed and Black-belted lemurs amongst others
And for some reason I'm thinking of a bird...

Sorry guys, im afraid the new mystery species is still under wraps for the minute!

A quick update -

Kwikila our female goodfellow's tree kangaroo is finally on show in her house only1 we have a little work to do to her outside paddock but she is settling in nicely!

One of our pairs of socoro doves is successfully rearing their second chick of the year as are our pair of white-browed coucals!

Three prairie dogs have indeed tunneled their way into the flamingo paddock, we are monitoring the impact they are having before worrying about moving them!

We have a few exacting new species arriving later this month, namely toco toucan, fijian banded iguana, orange-headed thrush and chestnut backed thrushes!

Pi our young male malayan tapir also left on tuesday for Nuerenberg zoo in germany!

Our new male francois has also been witnessed mating all our 5 females so fingers crossed to the future.

This with all the new easytigger mentioned means that we have been very busy! :)

Thanks for the update Al, good news about the langurs, hopefully Belfast can get back to breeding these species as successfully as they have in the past.

yeah good luck with that....I mean 5 females, at least 1 or more have to be pregnant:)

Looking forward to the Tocans and Iguanas Al

Lol I knew that prarie dog wa sup to something:p

Any updates on the other Anteater and Capybara?
