BELFAST Zoo has opened its doors to 22 colourful new arrivals – in the form of 21 Chilean flamingos and a female red panda.
Chilean flamingos first came to north Belfast in 2011 and the zoo now boasts a total of 36 of the pale salmon-pink birds that can be easily identified by their grey legs, pink knees and feet.
While there are six species of flamingo in the world, populations of Chilean flamingo have fallen from 500,000 to 200,000 in the last 40 years.
So in order to encourage breeding, the zoo aims to welcome a further 15 birds later this year in order to play an active role in their conservation.
Meanwhile, new female red panda Plocia, from Plock Zoo in Poland, will join Rua, who arrived from Cork in 2010. Red panda populations are also declining and this species is extinct in areas of China. Plocia and Rua’s keepers are hoping they will soon hear the pitter patter of tiny panda feet.
Zoo manager Mark Challis is delighted with the new arrivals.
“They have all settled in well and the whole team are looking forward to playing an active role in the conservation of two such wonderful species,” he said.
The arrival of 21 new birds has brought Belfast Zoo’s flock of flamingos to 36.
