A few weeks ago a Crowned lemur (Eulemur coronatus) was born, the gender and name will be announced soon.

In other news, the zoo has welcomed the birth of six Madagascar tree boas and five Fiji banded iguanas.

Just pointing it out, but this news is also on the zoo’s website, which I’ve linked above.

The baby crowned lemur has also been given the name Pip, as mentioned on their Facebook page.

A Francous’ langur was born May 8:

Nicknamed 'wee red' by Geraldine's family, baby Hóngxīn comes home with her every night so she can continue bottle feeding her every few hours.

Born on May 8, Geraldine has spent several months raising Hóngxīn and has now begun the process of slowly reintroducing her into the family unit.

A few things of note from my visit yesterday:
  • The prairie dogs are currently in the red panda's old enclosure, while their usual enclosure is 'under development', according to the latest map. I couldn't see any signs at their enclosure to say what was happening, but we might just wait and see.
  • The sloth is now in the reptile and amphibian house, specifically the last enclosure with the red-footed tortoises (and at least two Utila iguanas).
  • The sifaka's enclosure has received a major renovation, with new fencing and climbing frames, so it felt quite different from previous visits. The moloch gibbon enclosure also had new fencing and climbing structures.
  • Speaking of the moloch gibbons, I only saw one gibbon in the enclosure, which was the male, Hilo. Not so sure what happened to the female Kim (Hilo and Kim both came to the zoo in 2015 to replace the original breeding pair, Omar and Assini; information comes from the zoo's facebook page from that year).
All in all, I had a great visit yesterday and I will be uploading some photos to the gallery shortly.

I visited today as part of a long weekend in Belfast. Was overly impressed by the collection. Lots of visible and active animals. The zoo was pretty quiet being a week day.

Particular highlights were
  • A very active and curious young Crowned Lemur, I assume this was the hand raised individual
  • Red Backed Saki Monkey (new species to me)
  • Other active and busy primates: gorillas, lemurs, marmosets and tamarins
A few no shows: Sifakas, Otters and Howler Monkeys

Most enclosures are to a good standard. I felt the lion enclosure could use some refurbishing the most.

One question, what was held previously in enclosure 39 on the map, next to the porcupines. Looked a substantial size.

Does anyone know if they still have Golden cats in the collection? visited today but did not seen them which is a shame as it was one of the species I had hoped to see.

Thanks for the confirmation but that is a shame. Have seen them a few times in Europen zoos over the years but it seems like the captive population is dying out.

The golden cats have been gone for quite a while now actually, since 2019. I think I remember being told that the last golden cats were sent to Wuppertal after they failed to breed in Belfast. Their enclosure is now home to the Scots wildcats.

Anyone know anywhere info on the baby giraffe Ballysheen? visited today and no sign of her and her info card has been taken down, I know she was being hand reared and being kept separate from the other giraffes
