Belfast Zoo Belfast Zoo News 2024

Has the cheetah left the zoo already? No mention of it on the new updated map on website with the elephants already removed

I'm pretty sure the cheetah is still there, yet somehow whoever was editing the map must have forgotten to replace 'under development' at No. 32 with 'cheetah' a year ago, despite removing the elephants from the map only recently. Not to mention that the species list on their website looks largely unchanged, with the elephants still listed and the cheetah nowhere to be seen. I say "largely" as I've noticed that the prairie dogs are no longer listed on either the map or the species list, so they might be gone now.

Not only that, the Members area page of their website (which I've linked below) hasn't been updated since 2022 at the latest, as it still mentions planning the new lion habitat, which is around a year old now as we speak, as well as the picnic area and new species for 2022 (with alpacas being the only obvious new arrival of that year). God tell us this will get updated someday.

There’s an awful lot of enclosures ‘under development!’

I know the cheetah has arrived and the area that once housed black lion tamarins and pied tamarins now has a few plastic dinosaurs but where is the second dinosaur area?

The Map also mentions red howler monkey in the main monkey house, has the zoo acquired new individuals?

I'm sure they just forgot to remove the howler monkey from the map, as the zoo stopped keeping the species last year per Zootierliste. Now that you mention them though, I only realised now that the howlers have been removed from the website along with the prairie dogs. So while some updates have been made to both the map and species list, others have gone unchecked (like the elephants still being listed and the cheetah still not). These editors clearly aren't paying enough attention.

Mistakes can happen with maps and websites. If the howlers won’t retune I wonder what is being kept in their place? Red bellied lemurs perhaps?

*Elephant enclosure replacements*

Belfast Zoo is going Down under with our new Animals of Australia habitat . The former elephant enclosure is being transformed into an exciting new habitat that will show case the unique diversity of Australian wildlife and the challenges it faces.

In a phased approach from August 2024 visitors will see the return of iconic Australian species to Belfast Zoo.

Later this week, you will be able to view wonderful Red Necked Wallabies and Eastern Grey Kangaroos. Plan your visit and come along to view these amazing marsupials. www.belfastzoo.co.uk

Not something I would have guessed! Will be interesting to see what this looks like and what future ‘phases’ will be. Let’s hope by picking a smaller species such as this the indoor housing can be expanded for the giraffes!

More on the new Australian development. It mentions that they plan to add "several threatened and endangered Australian species in 2025". So the kangaroos and wallabies are just the first phase of the development, and any endangered species (as in species listed as threatened by the IUCN) they plan for the future will definitely be interesting.

Wonderful news. From the wording I assume common zoo species such as red kangaroos and emus are exempt.

I keep being hopeful, but yet convinced the zoo remains on a downward spiral in development. The current phase outs, rare species that left the collection and the haphazard sometimes nonsensical replacements with common species flies in the face of a well to do accredited EAZA/ BIAZA zoo facility. What is chiefly lacking is a good vision of what Belfast Zoo should become and work towards there instead have a couple of Council and Municipality appointees at the helm and in senior positions and a caretaker Govt. (read Council pulling the strings and with lack of real investment and just saving costs and own face as end net results).

Well, just wait and see what this new Australia exhibit will come out like.

An investigation is underway after a trainee keeper(over 18 years old)had been " locked in with lions " earlier this month. This short BBC news snippet is all that has been reported so far.
