Belfast Zoo Belfast Zoo News 2025

There certainly has been a shift in the zoos direction and reputation.
Do you know why this change has happened? At the start of the century, the zoo seemed to be focused on keeping and importing rare species and seemed to be generally successful in breeding most of their species too. Now it seems more focused on keeping mainstream animals (I understand money problems might be part of it).

As far as I’m aware Baako is still in the group and his mother has not yet had another baby since (again I’m not aware of any pregnancies/births or losses but that’s not to say there hasn’t been any)

Kamali had had her second baby who seems to be doing well and her first with Gugas, Kibibi has left a few years ago.

Namoki had successfully reared Grace for around a year I think before she tragically died but again I’m unaware of any further pregnancies etc

They are certainly a very genetically important group so it would be great to see some expansion and future births!
Thanks for the information. I wonder what they plan for Baaku in time- moving to a male group most likely as they don't have another area to keep him in.

It is odd that Kwanza or Namoki both appear not to have had more babies after their first. Only Kamili seems to breed more frequently. Namoki is certainly genetically valuable too as she is the only offspring of her mother Romina, herself the only offspring of wildcaught parents. So I don't imagine there is a block on breeding from her as she has no offspring since Olivia died aged around three years old- a big loss.

The direction change of collection is simply down to a change in zoo manager. One focused on keeping new species, developing husbandry and being involved in the wider zoo community and one more focused on the politics, health and safety and individual animals that he is interested in.

The zoo unfortunately is always going to be in a difficult situation. Can’t really say money is the issue as the zoo has received more money from the council in recent years than it has previously. But at times this has been misspent. Money to completely re fence the old lion enclosure to build a brand new enclosure a few years later. Boasting that its state of the art with it big massive windows but in reality it’s just slightly bigger and not really fit for purpose in the long run.

Areas that once housed black lion tamarins replaced by tacky dinosaurs. Alpaca, guinea pigs, emu and Bennett’s wallabies all species that your average farm park keeps, its personally not my taste but do the visitors notice I’m not sure!

Regarding the gorillas it’s hard to know. Gugas had previously been checked and his fertility had been put into question but all three females had concieved so it’s hard to know why it hasn’t happened again but then again the are complex and animals. I hadn’t realised Olivia was nearly three, so sad for all involved and especially Namoki.

Regarding the gorillas, if Baaku is still in the group there's no reason he couldn't father babies with Kwanza and Namoki if his father isn't doing so.

I was surprised to see Baako still there when I visited in summer. Gugas was chasing him about a fair bit but it never got physical. I thought there were plans to export him imminently? Is he still there?

A friend at the zoo has told me that Baako left for Givsgud earlier this month! Fingers crossed for more babies at Belfast!

That's so exciting! I heard there was rumors when I was at Givskud in October last year that he was the one that would become the new silverback of the group. Happy to hear they're finally moving along, the Givskud troop has been pretty unstable since the death of the previous silverback, hopefully Baako's introduction will bring some stability.

Isn't Kwanza Baako's mother? I know Baako's now moved to Givskud based on the posts above, but if he hadn't moved, what would be the point of breeding him with his own mother?! Now I don't wan't to start this kind of discussion on inbreeding, but I thought it was worth pointing out.

You are perfectly correct. I made a mistake there. I should have said Kamili and Namoki. But as Baaku has left it doesn't apply now.

There hasn't been any publicity about Baaku's arrival that I can see but Givsgud zoo is now closed for the winter season and he must have arrived around the start of that. I found a post on their FB page in answer to a question, asked in early December, about getting a new male for their group, it said something to the effect a new male had been sourced, but that's all. I've asked them if we can have some news about him but as its the closed season, maybe they will wait a while.

Five (3.2) Bush Dogs are arriving from Colchester Zoo on 23rd January: Bush Dog Family Update - Colchester Zoological Society

As reported in the Colchester thread 3-4 weeks ago, the bush dogs' move has been postponed (although Zootierliste lists them as having already arrived, so the move might have happened already).

Anyway, while not the most exciting news, two meerkats arrived in Belfast in January, and produced two kits shortly after settling in.

On March 3rd, it was announced that the zoo will acquire the (2.0) common chimpanzees Tombe and Tumba, as well as the (3.2) bush dogs from Colchester Zoo on March 4th.

The bush dogs are now on show in the former sun bear enclosure.

Wouldn’t the Exhibit be to big to see them. A around 2 years ago Perth Zoo moved there 2 Ring Tailed Lemurs into the old Baboon habitat which was to big compared to the Lemurs and now I barely see them. I know big space is good but not really big spaces for smaller animals.
