re sifaka their male did come from us, and we currently have a breeding pair with twoi young male offspring
 
Excellent! I half expected Tina to be alone for ever, and for the zoo to use "we're in the process of getting her a companion" as an excuse. Glad I was proved wrong :)
 
There is an article on the Belfast Zoo web-site about the adaptation of their elephant accommodation and move to Protected Contact to enable them to house a group of older non-breeding females .

No mention of the tree kangaroo on the web-site , presumably she is still off-show in quarantine .
 
Interesting new turn. Y'see, I've always felt this could be how Longleat could keep elephants again whilst maintaining their safari park ethos, working as a counterpart for retired african cows.
 
I don't see why Longleat can't have a breeding herd. It's a bit feeble to use "we don't want to keep a bull in a bull pen" as an excuse, as they could have a very big bull pen, and when they do exactly the same thing with their male rhino! They wouldn't even need to keep a bull by himself if he was docile like Jums at Howletts. They could keep them in a massive enclosure, and they'd be a huge draw, especially if they bred.

Yhettoo arrived at the zoo this morning (23rd JAN) after being transported from Krefeld, she has seen Tina, but they will not be mixed until keepers feel it is ok to do so after she has settled down and become accustomed to new routines, she will also be managed via protected contact in accordance with Belfast zoo's elephant managment policy.

Also, looking for some news on the tree kangaroo and giant anteater
 
giraffe / ele house will be open business as usual, probably best time to see yhettoo as due to legislation she can't go outside till blood tests are done.
Not seen tree kangaroo myself yet and can't help re anteaters
 
Tree roo won't be on show for a few months but shes doing well! The giant anteater male will be arriving shortly and will be on show for easter also!he will be joined by a pair of capybara and will be on exhibit in one of the smaller paddocks down the avenue of the zoo!

Seems to have been a new trend with giant anteaters in the UK; a few years ago they were a rarity with only London keeping them, then suddenly they crop up at Colchester, Howletts, Marwell, Edinburgh, Amazon World and now Belfast.

I've never actually seen one in person before, only on telly so it'd be a great treat to see the male.
 
Hi all, just a little belfast update - a female giant anteater should arrive not long after we receive our male. She will be coming from zurich zoo. The capybara will indeed be a breeding pair also with a male coming from edinburgh and a female from twycross.

The three male crowned lemurs will also arrive soon to mix with our pair of red-bellied lemurs and will be joined by a breeding pair of belted ruffed lemurs who are currently in quarantine at newquay zoo.

Our second sifaka has been born at the zoo, his name is Steven, unfortunately Mum was found to have no milk so he is being hand reared by one of our most experienced keepers.

One of our young male sealions left along with a male blue crowned laughing thrush to rotterdam zoo.

A pair of blue-bellied rollers have just been added to the new rainforest house. these are amazingly beautiful birds and are rarely seen. The male came from london and the female from cotswolds.

Our new pair of young von der deckens hornbills will out of quarantine soon also and will be mixed with our flock of white browed coucals in one of the new bird flights.

A second lion-tailed macaque baby has been born recently to our eldest female in the group.

As far as i know a toatl of 4 baby spider monkeys have been born in the last few months too.

Three new female red kangaroos have also arrived from paris zoo to mix with our remaining mob. 1.2 others may are hoped to arrive later in the year.


Most importantly however our biggest arrival as easytigger as aformentioned is Yhetoo the asian elephant from krefeld zoo in germany. Ive only seen her briefly once but she is a beautiful little elephant!:):):)
 
Wow, thanks so much for the update Al!! Crowned lemurs with red-bellied lemurs and belted lemurs, that sounds like a fantastic mix of beautiful and very rare animals!! Congrats to the new sifaka baby, I`m just a bit sad that it`s a male again - there are scarily few females in the European population and I really fear for the future of the species if not a female baby boom will start soon.
Great to hear that Yethoo arrived safely - she has terribly suffered in Krefeld, being mobbed and attacked heavily by the two other females and being chained each night. I think she never had an elephant friend. It would be great if you could keep us updated about her progress and if she is bonding with Tina.
 
Thanks yassa good to hear from you. I'll ask a zoo friend who is also on the forum with the updates as I dont work in the team. What I do know Tina has initially been more nervous than Yhetoo. Also as our elephants are on protective contact she will never have a chain on her leg again!:)
