The Point Defiance Zoo in Tacoma (near Seattle) has malayan tapirs, sumatran tigers, siamang gibbons, lowland anoa and white-cheeked gibbons rotating through different exhibits several times a week, and occasionally a few times in a single day. The enrichment system at the zoo is fantastic, and it sure beats being stuck in the same enclosure day after day, year after year.

Having seen the Dama gazelles at Marwell casually sniffing at the chain link fence dividing them from the cheetahs without a single nervous movement while the cheetahs, centimetres away, appear to be excited/frustrated, maybe prey species in zoos are quite capable of judging the integrity of the barriers that protect them from nearby carnivores and it is this that governs their sense of threat, rather than the constant proximity.

I similarly seen tahr in Basel grazing calmly one meter away from two snow leopards licking their mouths.

Of course it is. Wild ungulates meet predators every day and perfectly know what distance is safe. Big cats, in turn, spend hours watching prey hoping it comes within jumping distance. :D

Baby sifaka!

Great news! A sifaka was born yesterday, not sure of sex yet but it is very exciting bringing our group to 3.1.1! Also two ringtailed lemurs have been born.:D

That's great news about the sifakas.

What's happened to the Belfast Zoo website? All I can find now is a corner of the city council site which is not as informative as the old site.

As far as i know it is a UK first birth however they mated while in Paris so technically they weren't bred here!

The zoo's website is being relaunched in the next few months as we are being re-branded! The new one will be alot more upto date than the old one with alot more info!

Great news for the sifakas in Belfast (and Europe too). A third breeder! :)

Any chance that this Paris inspired Propithecus verrauxi coronatus breeding programme may develop into a fully fledged ESB or EEP?

Just a quick update, we have just been offered a young female giant anteater, which will arrive later this year and be mixed with a pair of pudu and southern screamer. Tree kangaroo still set to arrive but not for a few months. Planned to get sclaters lemur, crowned lemur and aloatran gentle lemurs later this year too. Our male black-footed cat is due to return from wuppertal soon to breed with all our females! Exciting times ahead!

Rainforest exhibit has been opened for easter though it will close again soon as two 18ft trees are to arrive and the sloth, bats and other bird species still have to be introduced!

That will make the Pudu and Screamer a bit more intresting how much is the enclosure going to have to be altered for the Anteater.Excellent news about the Black-footed Cats good luck with breeding them.

The house will have to be altered alittle and a viewing window installed, the pool area will be dug out again and the paddock landscaped slightly most likely with a few pampas planted, the hedge and fence infront of the public viewer will most likely be removed to allow better veiws too!

Sifakas, crowned lemur, Sclater`s lemur, gentle lemur... great!! Fantastic that Belfast is going into these rare and endangered species.

Any news if the sifaka baby is a male or a female?

Sifaka is still well but mum is keeping it nice and close so no sex yet!

Are your black-footed cats unrelated to Wuppertal's? Is the male proven yet .. as black-footeds are notoriously difficult to breed?

Has the lone female Mhorr gazelle already left for Spain? Which zoo is it now destined for?

yes the three females are all unrelated to wuppertals! our male has bred there at least once to my knowledge!

the gazelle is still here and should be heading to madrid soon

Johti and Vishesh have safely left Belfast and are on their way to Ostrava!

So what is the plan for them there? Are Ostrava going to bring in another bull at some point? Do you know any more about the future of Asian elephants at Belfast? It seems as if the current enclosure will be modified and you will house post-reproductive females in future? Any plans for a grass paddock?

I agree - great news about all these lemurs, they seem to be becoming quite a speciality for you these days! You must be very happy about that. :D

Also great news about the anteater, it's really good to see this species on the increase in UK zoos and I hope that the trend continues.
