Sorry to harrass anyone about it, but i'm still rather curious to what sex the baby Sifaka was and if it's still going strong...

The zoo website has announced the the sifaka born in March is called Arthur, so it looks as though it is a male

Website is due to be launched in July! The sifaka is still unsexed, so arthur may be female!:) also new species to the zoo include socorro doves and monserat orioles oh and madagascan tree boa! the female giraffe arived safely!

Polar bears at Belfast

Does anyone have pictures or know anything about the history of polar bears at Belfast? When I was a kid I used to write to zoos for information and I remember receiving loads of stuff from Belfast including lots of information and drawings of their new polar bear enclosure which I know is now used by the Spectacled bears. Hopefuly the material is still at my parent's house somewhere! Anyone know anything more about polar bears at Belfast?

I remeber seeing the zoocheck report in polar bears in the UK, and this was maybe the mid-eighties, their animals reportedly showed the least stereotypic behaviour of all the polar bears at that point in the UK. I believe there was a male and two females at the time of the study, and one of the females may have been in the cubbing den. I don't have access to this study and this is purely from memory, so I can't remember which animals these were. I'm guessing the three were the last polar bears at Belfast, does anyone know if they bred/ where they went?

I think I read somewhere they might have gone to New Zealand.

They never bred, the male died and the females were sent to a zoo in holland i think but will find out more!

With 2 females giraffes to Antwerp and another 3 to Blackpool I am wondering how many are left in the herd .

My only visit to Belfast was with an IZES group over 10 years ago - most impressive collection . I think it might have been Al who took us around .

That makes more sense . I was going by the Giraffes Return to Blackpool Zoo thread which said they came from Belfast .

"Kwikila" the 2 year old tree kangaroo will arrive at the zoo, this autumn from Beauval zoo.

More info on that for ya

Kwikila the tree kangaroo
The zoo will welcome its first tree kangaroo in autumn 2008.

Kwikila was born in November 2006 in Zoo Parc de Beauval in France.

She still lives with her parents in France, but her species originally hail from the mountainous rainforest habitats of Papua New Guinea and Indonesia.

Unlike ground kangaroos, tree kangaroos are quite clumsy on the ground but they have an amazing jumping ability within trees.

Their feet are shorter and wider to help them grip tree branches, and they can jump nine metres from one tree to another or 18 metres from a tree to the ground without being hurt.
