Hi Al,

Long time no hear speak?

What is happening in Belfast Zoo in the autumn. How are the new species doing? When is the female tree kangaroo due from Beauval and what about an US mate for hers? And the sifaka has it/he been sexed (apparently Apenheul a sending on their male to France in order to receive a Paris V. based breeding group! Any chance of a female for Belfast?

Lots of questions, lots of excitement .... :D

Animal update

Hi jelle,

the young sifaka turned out to be male! fingers crossed for the next!

the tree roo is due to arrive in two weeks, i spent some time in beauval earlier this year and she is currently separate from her parents ( and has been for at least two months now.)

our first giant anteater is also due to arrive in november

other new species hopefully arriving over the winter will include helmetted currasows, tawny frogmouths, kookaburra, mindoan bleeding heart dove and many other tasty bird species

our reptile area is getting a much needed upgrade with the introduction of several tasty managed species but will have to watch this space to see what arrives

other new animals will include new female red kangaroos, female blesbok for are male, ostrich for our mixed antelope herd, two male crowned lemurs and a group of belted ruffed lemurs hopefully!

this is just the tip of the iceberg really as there are a few big arrivals too plus a couple of species, one which is not currently in the UK and the other only one collection outside of asia current keep it! both of which will hopefully appear next year

i had a really amazing trip in california recently and made some good contacts!

im afraid i'll have to keep you all guessing!!:)

Belfast is getting anteaters? Were will it be place? The rainforest house? And where is the tree roo being placed aswell?
My cousin will be wetting himself when he knows Belfast is getting anteaters!:P
So exciting.

the anteaters will be mixed with the pudu and screamer and the tree kangaroo will be housed in the old purple-faced enclosure beside the sifaka!:)

Awsome and what was that about Gemsboks? Are ya getting any of them? I know about some type of antelope would be mixed with the giraffes and all but never guessed Gemsbok:P

they arte blesbok but there are no current plans to mix them with the giraffes

Ooooo I'm intirgued :)
Need to get to Belfast as it seems to have improved a lot since I went in 2006.
What's going on with the elephants? Will you be getting any more as companions for Tina?

more elephants will arrive but there are no set dates as yet! like all zoos we are changing every day!

Have you got a map please? Strolch at Chester zoo has died, so that male could be paried up with there female?

Well if the tree kangaroos on it way soon will start looking for cheap flights for Belfast to come over and see it.

Good to hear all the news

Hi Al,

Just joined up today and saw all your stuff. How are my old gorilla and chimp pals doing?I have not been able to get to the Belfast zoo for over a year now. Is it true Boulas has moved to a Polish zoo? He is such a wonderful gorilla, known him since his young Howletts days. His half brother Bitanu (Barney) has moved to a new enclosure with his mother and other very older 'aunties' but was not taking that so well at the weekend.

Would love to know as to how the gorilla and chimp groups are doing? Did the young blackback male that was there just take over? How is Kakuma and the lovely Kamili? She really is the image of her Mum Zaire!

Any news greatly appreciated, you have already written alot!!

Cheers, Many Thanks, Hope life in CaveHill is going well! :)

Do you know how long ago the 3 old females of Bitam's old group and Djangou's group exchanged enclosures at Howletts? As well as Bitanu there are two more youngsters added to that group now, making 6- do you know their names?

Hey Pertinax,

Good to hear from you, just joined ZooBeat and Taun thought we should hook up. A quick reply as headed to train. I am not sure exactly of the move but can find out, it is within the last 4 months. A very flying visit the other day to see Kouillou and Barney so only noticed one other juvenile, about 6 years old. Bitanu was relating well to him/her (couldn't see which sex as far away). Sadly he was very clingy to JuJu and trying to feed as comfort from her, which not usual behaviour for him as he was often on his platform showing off and not near Mum, although he would often try and get BabyDoll to join in his play. Djanghou's group all look very happy but too flying a visit to notice much I'm afraid.

Can relate back later

Hi GorillaFollower.
Sounds like we may have been there the same day- SAturday? Funnily enough I also saw Bitanu suckling from Juju(or trying to) and I was a bit surprised at that. Juju was quietly plucking and eating the hair on his arm in return.. I definately saw two other juveniles in with them both same aged- about 6 years, but no name boards on the original run of cages..

Hi Pertinax, sorry for delay in returning but was away working. So well, what a coincidence unless Bitanu was suckling the whole day and JuJu was pulling his shoulder hair the whole day as well!! We may well have been standing next to each other watching the rather sad little scene. Well, well, small world!! Must try to find out who the young gorilla was that was in with Bitanu.

By the way do you know whether Boulas, Bitanu's half brother who moved to Belfast Zoo has moved to a Polish Zoo? I have not got to Belfast for quite some time and am trying to find that out. That would be great to find out. You do seem to be in the know!!:)

Heading to London Zoo next week so you never know....

Hi gorillafollower i'll post bout belfasts animals asap, though for now boulas is still here at belfast and will not be going to warsaw.:o

Yes, Juju had plucked a little bare spot on his upper arm. Don't forget there were two (not one) juveniles in with them. I always find after visiting Howletts, that all other Gorilla groups seems rather insignificant for a while- there is just no comparison!!

Boulas was still at Belfast at least until a couple of weeks ago. He was supposed to be joining the small new bachelor group in Warsaw but it seems this may have been called off. There may be other changes happening there as well but Boulas still needs to leave as I've been told there's a lot of tension between him and the younger male Gugas.
