Could ‘perdiz’ not be a tinamou species?

Thank you for sharing this list, much appreciated...

But I think, you should move the greater rhea from the mammals to the birds ;)

Would love to see a comeback of the marsh deer in our European / German zoos

Oh, sorry :D:D:D if I have added rheas to the mammals was pure lack of attention. Gonna post the definitive list with the missing translated names and the changes that I must do very soon. Also, yeah, I think brazilian/south american zoos should have more contact with european zoos in general, to help with conservation of the marsh deer and many other species... I know Dortmund zoo has a good contact with brazilian zoos of Belo Horizonte and Brasilia, so I hope they exchange more animals in the following years; this would be very productive for conservation.

Yes , you are right FBird, lazy mistake on my part.

This word is used for the partridge in Portugal and the tinamou in Brazil. As both are popular game birds for hunting the word is basically used for both.

However, in the context of the list "perdiz" refers to the tinamou.

Red-winged tinamou to be more precise. While we do use the word as a generic and nontaxonomic name for some Old World gamebirds (Chukar partridge, californian crested quails...)

Haven't there been historic issues with keeping marsh deer alive in European zoos ?

I seem to remember reading that several attempts at various different zoos to keep herds of this species failed due to deaths from disease (could be mistaking it with another species though).

Zoo Berlin - a known quantity with captive-breeding of rare and delicate deer species - had a very successful run with marsh deer for a good number of years from 1977 to 2009. The species was also bred there.

Thanks Kifaru! Very interesting !

What happened to this herd though ? did it just die out or was there no longer any interest in maintaining the species so it was phased out ?

The marsh deer herd died out over time probably due to ageing herd, too few births, no new imports as well as probably little interest in maintaining a delicate deer species in captivity by zoos at the time. The marsh deer at Berlin Zoo were from Paraguayan stock.

IZY had a report on marsh deer. Dr. Hans Fraederich wrote about breeding threatened deer in captivity in this volume.

By the time I made this list there were some animals I didn't know the correct name in english.

What can be helpfull regarding bird species, is Avibase. You can select a country or region and the checklist provides you the English and scientific names next to the language you are using.

Wikipedia is also usefull to find the species name in an other language. Put in "veado-mateiro-pequeno" and on the left side you will see the link to "small red brocket".

Thank you! gonna try these sources. Also, do you know if there is a way to delete the present list? When I have the updated one, I would like to replace it.
