Dartmoor Zoo Bens Zoo, What a joke!

Leaving it in was bad for the old wolf, it was a pity that the 'second in command' hadn't tried to assert some dominance before this rapid downturn of the old guys health.

QUOTE]

As was explained they had seperated the wolves due to Parker vying for position of pack leader. If the old wolf had simply been removed then Parker would have become the new Alpha male (in the wild the animal has a chance to get away, behind a fence the animal is some what restricted), no other wolves seemed to be attemting to assertain a dominant position, Suggesting the pack would have simply accepted Parker and got on with it.

Plus, perhaps we already saw some of this struggle in an earlier episode. What was it that made the wolf jump the fence. I worked there for several years, and not once was there a wolf escape. Maybe this power struggle was already going on for a while, Who knows??.

My guess is that as soon as the old Alpha started to show signs of failing, Parker naturally started to have an eye for the top position. Maybe that created tension among the others- hence an escape.

You are basically confirming my suspicions- it was hyped up a bit as the reality was potentially less exciting.

So where is the Lioness.

Hi Liz
Thanks for that
There are no lions being shot in the series. Infact there have been no lions shot whatsoever since the park was taken over

Ok so you say it was not shot, so what has happened to it.

I knew about one being Euthanased, That was long before you guys were up there.

It is fair to say that there are indeed three African lions in the Bens zoo footage, and yet in your own stock list which you have placed in another thread (dated 12 Sept 2007), you clearly indicate having only 1.1. Now I'm not the best at maths but that definately makes two lions, where's number 3.

Wolves.

On the other Dartmoor Zoo thread in UK Zoos, there's a stock list that shows 2.5 wolves. Is that before or after the old Alpha died? At most it left only 'Parker' and one other male (or just Parker?). In which case 'Parker' would probably have assumed command without any bloodshed.

Where is that lion?!

Living in wales, I get Bens zoo one week behind, so second episode!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Where to start, since Ben and his staff have constantly mentioned animal abuse, I was supprised to see them cause so much.

Darting the Jag, the guy had the gas turned up to the max, Ive never seen a darted animal jump like that, that was excessive. But why dart it to move it 200yds, he is good to crate, and it only had to be done again after the repairs were finished.

Darting the tiger was hysterical. did someone really try to hold Tammy down for a second as she came round! The cameraman was the first to notice she was coming round, but he also noticed the were dragging her on the floor! No wonder she came round! Why not crate her at the enclosure?
Also why did the keepers tell ushow cruel it was to treat the tigers in this way, then admit to abusing them for 5 years!

The whole wolf thing, Crumbs! who had that idea, why did you even think Zak was dominant? He never raised his tail once, he held no rank and could have been spared three days of misery, it was five moments to us on tv, but he had 72 hours! Waiting to die, that shouldnt be allowed. I dont think Parker is the Alpha either, he would like to be, but his escape was after a failed attempt to claim rank that failed. Lock out for the big gray guy at the back, he has it.

Then we come to the lions, all three of them, to see Josie charge at that zebra was a treat, she was born and raised on Dartmoor, and as you could see, has had random toys all here life, so the cardboard zebra didnt stand a chance. Both Solomon and Peggy came from other places, so werent so up for it, Tapier poo gets them going! There was Peggy lookin lovely in march we are told on the tv, but your previously posted stock list clearly shows only two lions in august.

Where is Peggy? Did you wait till the cameras had left to get rid of her encase it makes you look less like animal rescuers?

Third episode for me on wednesday, I hear its a Vervet that gets out!

I'm pretty sure that's Emma, Josie and Soloman you saw. AFAIK there's been no Peggy there since the Mee's took over.

Cheers for that, my info must be confused, was told it was emma, that was put down wi cancer about 18 months ago, peggys mum. So if peggy had cancer, and was destroyed 18 months ago, where is emma? It doesnt look like emma though, she was so angular, and bigger than soloman!

thanks for your help chuck

Wormy WooWoo it sounds more like you have a grudge against the zoo:confused:, it owners present and past, than a real attempt to find out what happened to this so called lioness called "peggy".

While yes they have made some real big mistakes, and am sure that they will readily admit that. Darting the jaguar - Such a powerful and dangerous animal, am not surprised they darted it. The layout of the houses are not great and getting a create inside to crate it would be presumable difficult.

Tiger darting - I see your point that the van was too far away for this type of activity. It was quite comically how they dealt with the situation.

You have and i presume you still work in animal husbandry, why instead of criticise them for their mistake don’t you offer support for overall project they are trying to achieve. No business can be turned around overnight, judge the new owners in 5 or 10 years when they have had a chance to improve the facilities.

If they haven’t then improved the situation that their animals live under, then come back and continue your grudge.

Hi, no grudge, I really am trying to find that girl, I was the first person to see them when they came from Dudley. I dont know if anyone remembers the two old boys the park had, Zimba and Floyd from the scrapyard in cornwall, but when Floyd had to be put down we got the girls in.

I have been negative to the new owners, as he is being negative to the previous, and I really feel there is no need, I dont think an 80 year old man is responsible for all they claim. I know its been done to make good TV, but it really is upsetting people to see old furry friends die.

We used to crate by placing the crate in the run, in front of the door from the house, so as animal left house, it was into the crate. The park is designed for it.

I have the fondest memories of the place, and want to see it go on, it was opened in1968, the owner being a friend of Johnny Morris, who came and opened the restaurant years later.

aHeronry was also started nearby with the help of the R.S.P.C.A, wich is now in decline as the new owners no longer feed the birds, even though it was a condition of the sale, the chick losses this spring will be massive.

No grudge, just gutted at the treatment of my freinds, furry and human.

Not necessarily. The adult herons will probably go elsewhere to find food if they're not artificially fed. After all, they're British birds in their natural environment. Most heronries contain many nests all close together with the parents travelling further afield to local rivers to fish... Why not these?

Jaguar darting- nor have I...

Wolves- so the whole thing about Parker needing to recognise the old 'alpha' male dying, before he could take over.... was rubbish.. People watch it and believe what they're told though...

Zimba and Floyd

I dont know if anyone remembers the two old boys the park had, Zimba and Floyd from the scrapyard in cornwall, but when Floyd had to be put down we got the girls in.

Hi worm

I have fond memories of 'Zimba' and 'Floyd' the two male lions rescued by Dartmoor from the car breakers yard in Cornwall-They were also lucky enough to find a second hand gearbox for their jaguar!! Tee hee lol !

I remember Zimba and Floyd, right pair they were (what fun, when people would stand near the tower winding them up, they just sauntered down to the fence line, turned around and sprayed them). I also remember having to help 'carry the crates containing Peggy and Emma, to the front hatches of the lion house' (opposite the tiger house)!!. you'll know what I mean.

hi,
I know that 2 of the staff have more qualifacations than you can shake a stick at . I do argree that some things are not handeld that well but at least they are trying. And by involving the press he probally got money and contacts that he wouldnt have otherwise.
And by showing things that go wrong , they show to the general public that working with animals is not always fun or easy.
cheers Kiwi
