on my visit to whipsnade today i learnt that berkley the male sealion has passed away on the 21st of june 2009

Aw no! He was awesome :(

Sorry to bump an old thread but i have just stumbled accross it.
Thats such awful news.Berkeley was a sea-lion i grew up knowing i saw him every year :)
He had such a funny character and was huge.Hopefully Dom will stay on and become the new Bull Sea-Lion.

yeah hopefully but if he does where will liz and salt go and on the dolphin and defra thread could whipsnade or zsl be the place getting the dolphins

Im not sure about Liz and Salt how old are they?
Maybe some new blood could be a good idea for the group with 1/2 new female Sea Lions joining the group.
Im pretty sure that Dolphins will not be coming to Whipsnade as the enclosure did hold Dolphins but now holds Sea Lions due to the welfare issues and everything else.

I wil try and check their ages when i go during the Summer but there really is no chance of Dolphins returning to Whipsnade - The Risks with Born Free and everything will be unbelievable and it works much better with Sea-Lions now having been renovated for them.

No way would they house dolphins in that pool again. And I think Salt is the oldest, I'm almost certain she's in her mid to late 20s.

in an old thread bongorob said that they wont get dolphins, but it is poss, but there owuld be a new pool, if all of the current sealions go and they are not replaced, the pool is likley to be demolished

They can't demolish the pool, it's listed. There's no way they'd get dolphins, they didn't get polar bears again because they didn't feel they could be housed properly, even in a new enclosure.

but tht was a a few years ago maybe they can now meet the required standards again after all lions have returned to the zoo after a few years

But there's little or no controversy with keeping lions, dolphins require a lot more room and expensive facilities, and there's a question as to weather they can even be kept properly.

ashley is right there is a huge difference between lions and polar bears/dolphins

no animal has been critisised in the uk than dolphins and polar bears, and none less than lions.

but it is poss for them to retain them (im in dreamworld here)
