Berlin Zoo Berlin Zoo news 2025

My 2 cents on the matter is that the Capital facilities are quite able and known how to move the animals in both facilities, but there's different stakeholders that go in the way: heritage and historical buildings/structures (which I also like), economic difficulties and human pride on both the zoo and sustainers' side, to maintain a legacy of symbol-animals which means spending more to upgrade something that could be built cheaper/easier on the sister facility's site.
A lot of the ill will sentiment is down to Berlin Zoo shareholders .... (bulking in cash and a good source for Berlin Zoo to survive financially without Municipality...). Some of them have yet to come to terms with the fact that Berlin is now a city of shared histories where East Berliners do count and have their equal place and base in Berlin Capital City. Unfortunately, as you so rightly put it, consequently the Tierpark Berlin sometimes suffers unduly... I really, really would hope that the orang utans will eventually get a spot in Tierpark (which I know ... is probably remote and absolute wishful thinking on my part).

The bigotry is absolutely ridiculous. They ought to be proud that they've got two world class sites to work with. I imagine London Zoo would love to have the cash of Berlin, with a 400 acre site within the city, well connected by trains, trams and the ubahn!

That’s great! Do they still keep red river hog, babirusa and white lipped peccary in the pig house too?

Red river hogs are held at the Tierpark only as far as I know (and that was the case June 2024), but the peccaries and babirusa are still at the Zoo along with warthogs and warty pigs.

Is there any information on where the Chacoan peccaries have arrived from? I know the Tierpark had a positively huge group in recent years so between both collections there must be a sizeable number

Technically the Chacoans are not IN the Swine House but across the way from it. Big group of White-lipped (as ever). Its a long time since public access was given inside the house, but it was one of the great throwback zoo experiences.
I first went in 2016 and you couldn’t get in then. I was gutted!

Such a fascinating house! Do we know the highest number of species it held in its heyday?

As it has not been posted on here:

On the 4th April, Zoo Berlin announced 1.1 Beisa Oryx arrived from Tierpark Berlin and Prague Zoo. They can be seen in the former Grant's Zebra and Common Eland exhibit. The Grevy's Zebra can also be seen in this exhibit now too.

Do we know which species are now exhibited in the previous Grevys zebra enclosure?

It's been reported that white-bearded gnu will join the beisa oryx and grevy's zebra. Then after some renovation work the enclosures behind will be home to dromedary camels, Somali wild ass and addax!
Oh of course! Making room for the rhinoceros complex. Shame to lose those species, especially the eland, but it will definitely add to that area of the zoo and allow for both collections combined to maintain the diversity. Interesting the camels are moving though, have they specified whether it's all of them or not?
