Berlin Zoo Berlin Zoo news 2025

The entire(!) size of the "Erweiterungsgelaende" in Berlin is dedicated with 3.4 hectares (= about 8.5 acres), so about 2 acres bigger...
Afaik (=if my memory is correct), Congo is/was filled with 1 enclosure for Colobus, 1 enclosure for okapis, 1 enclosure for mandrills, guegnons and red river hogs and 2 for gorillas (plus a few indoor enclosures for birds, reptiles, amphibians, fishes and invertebrates).
You can find the infos here: ZooLex Exhibit - Congo Gorilla Forest

Depending on what your expectations are. I would say the entire "Erweiterungsgelaende" has far enough space for at least Gorillas and Bonobos or Okapis plus some smaller "filler" species. And I estimate it has at least the size of Bronx' Congo exhibit.
I was mostly provoking an answer, I was not aware of the actual size of the zoo expansion (but when I was there it didn't look that big to me), but spite and the feeling of proving someone wrong are much more efficient than asking normally at times:D.

I'm planning a trip to Berlin Zoo in a few weeks time which I'm excited about, and I was wondering if there were any tips or things not to miss for a first time visit. Always keen to see new and rare species, plus I'm also going to Leipzig Zoo mainly to see the pangolins so it should be a good couple of visits. Won't have time for the Tierpark though sadly.

The young Pygmy Hippo TONI will soon be transferred to another zoo.
Dear Toni fans, As some of you already saw in our Stories last week: Yes, Toni will be leaving the zoo this year. We understand that many of you are sad about Toni’s departure. We've already received a number of questions, and we’d like to answer them here. Why is Toni leaving? This decision was not made lightly. It is based on a recommendation from the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP), which carefully considers the long-term future of this endangered species. These programs are overseen by experienced experts who weigh what is best for the individual animal and for the population as a whole. (MORE IN COMMENTS)"

They are both only at Zoo Berlin. The ocelot has been behind the scenes for quite a while. The beaver should be there, but seeing as it’s a beaver it can be quite long to wait for it to go out.

thank you. does anyone know if berlin zoo or the tierpark have many marmoset or tamarin species. zootierliste only seems to mention one species

Ah thank you! I was sure I saw them listed on the website, so it's odd that they're just absent from the map when there's clearly space for them. Are there any stand out species not on the map that I shouldn't miss when I go?

It's a very strange decision, especially when the zoo's sign mascot is the sloth bear! I suppose when the zoo still held polar bears they would have taken up a bit of space in the Northern section of that green spot, but still...surely they could put a sloth bear on there

I generally dislike stylized maps like the ones for the Berlin collections, but honestly the one for the zoo does a very good job of showing all the heavy hitters in a given area. You have stand outs like the gerenuk that aren't directly shown but are found in the antelope house, for example. I also find Berlin to be one of the easiest zoos to walk around even without a map so it's hard to miss even the ones with nothing shown at all. If there are any other species in particular you'd like to know the location of then I'm sure nobody would mind helping!

Will definitely be looking out for the gerenuk and takin, plus any animals that are hard to find in captivity. The creatures of the night enclosure looks very interesting, is there a full species list for that somewhere?

Also yeah the Berlin map isn't perfect, but it isn't terrible either I've definitely seen worse. I just wish more zoo websites would include a fuller species list to get a better idea of what they have in their collection.
