Berlin Zoo Berlin Zoo news 2025

Will definitely be looking out for the gerenuk and takin, plus any animals that are hard to find in captivity. The creatures of the night enclosure looks very interesting, is there a full species list for that somewhere?
Luckily both the takin and gerenuk are in the same place effectively, with the takin being to the north of the path and the gerenuks directly opposite to the south! As for Creatures of the Night, the most recent official list is from 2023 and as follows:

  • Seba’s short-tailed bat
  • Pallas’s long-tongued bat
  • Ansell’s mole-rat
  • Springhare
  • Senegal bushbaby
  • Aardvark
  • Goodman’s mouse lemur
  • Lesser hedgehog tenrec
  • Kinkajou
  • Bengal slow loris
  • Bolivian night monkey
  • Southern three-banded armadillo
  • Fennec fox
  • African pygmy mouse
  • Coruro
  • Pale gerbil
  • Malagasy giant rat
  • Sugar glider
  • New Guinea short-beaked echidna
  • Eastern quoll
I don't believe there have been any changes since, although I don't recall the coruros on my last trip (likely just me being slightly oblivious). It's a fantastic exhibit, definitely worth spending a decent amount of time in as the species held are very active.
Also yeah the Berlin map isn't perfect, but it isn't terrible either I've definitely seen worse. I just wish more zoo websites would include a fuller species list to get a better idea of what they have in their collection.
Oh completely! I still use the old Tierpark map to navigate sometimes, as it notes every single large species by name and exhibit shape. I understand that many zoos only want to add webpages for headline species as they require a lot of time and effort, but having a proper species list would be a godsend, especially when it comes to updating sites like Zootierliste! But I suppose we are in the nerdy minority, and the general public don't mind all that much

Ok brilliant thanks! That's quite an impressive species list, couple on there I haven't seen before so that's pretty exciting. And yeah us zoo enthusiasts are not the commonest of folk so I understand why usually only the flagship species are shown on promotional material.

The creatures of the night enclosure looks very interesting, is there a full species list for that somewhere?

These are the species I saw when I visited in July last year:

Coruro, Short-beaked Echidna, Eastern Quoll, Northern Dry Zone Slender Loris, Grey-handed Night Monkey, Aardvark, Southern Springhare, Ansell's Mole Rat, Seba's Short-tailed Bat, Malagasy Jumping Rat & Fennec Fox.

I'd take your confirmed spotted list over my "apparently held 2 years ago" list any day of the week! :D Thanks for confirming the coruro are still held. Can you remember which exhibit they're in?

I seem to recall they were near the Malagasy Jumping Rats and the bats though don't quote me as admittedly I became really quite disoriented in there.

  • Kowari

I fixed the list for you :)

As of april 2025, like Mickey already mentioned, Large Bamboo rats were added.
The kowari was also missing from the list
One species that is no longer there is the pale gerbil.
The Bengal slow loris have been replaced by slender loris.
(in april, the echidna, bamboo rats, slender loris and tenrec were no-shows for me)

Just spent a full day at Berlin Zoo and it was honestly the best zoo day I think I've ever had. Might be the best I've ever been to, except maybe Chester. I saw so many new species I'd never seen before which was wonderful. The Creatures of the Night exhibit is so full of animals it's like how the London Zoo Moonlight World used to be, and all the enormous enclosures and large space make the zoo feel so lovely for the animals and walkable too.

The Eagle Canyon was a real highlight too, as was the extensive bird collection and of course Aquarium and herpetological collection. The architecture too is beautiful, especially the Antelope House, and to be so close to the sloth bears was honestly goose bump inducing

There's so much there it's like a biodiversity overload! Managed to see almost everything too which was equally thrilling. Will post photos when I get home but won't be for a while as I'm going to Leipzig in a few days too.

The day I went to Leipzig the pangolin feed was advertised at 13:30, however, it started a few minutes earlier than the advertised time, so don't be late.

I am glad you enjoyed your stay so much. When it comes to depth and density of the collection, Berlin Zoo is quite amazing. And some of the buildings and enclosures are very special or even unique.

If you return to Berlin in a couple of years, I would still recommend taking some days to explore Berlin Tierpark. It is much less walkable and has nowhere near the same density (and in fact they lack some highlight species like apes, seals etc.). But if you are up for a bit of walking, you will just discover so many amazing places. For me it does not take more than taking my time and just letting myself fully enjoying it, to still experienxe the same magic as during my first visits as a child - just after the wall came down (or possibly we even went over there before that, I can't fully remember).

There is a lot of things in Berlin which I like and also quite a few things I dislike. But I always loved it for this city to have these two amazing zoos. Both cater to different tastes (for me it will always be the Tierpark, whereas the Zoo may be a better match for yourself). But nothing beats having and visiting them both.

Thank you, it was wonderful. Such biodiversity is amazing. I definitely want to see the Tierpark at some point because it looks equally as interesting and worthwhile, though a lot bigger of course. I also want to go to a place which I've forgotten the name of but had a lot of carnivores including all the hyena species I think? It's nearby Berlin somewhere but I don't know the name. As for Berlin Zoo itself, it was really good I can’t stress that enough.

Maybe this one: Sydower Fließ (Wildkatzenzentrum Felidae) ?
According to ZTL there's only one hyena species, but that's the only hyena holder near Berlin according to ZTL

Oh yes that's the one! Thanks, it does look rather impressive with all the carnivores they have.

I visited the pangolin enclosure at 12:00 last april, and saw one very active animal. The pro to visiting outside feeding times is less crowds (it was a very crowded day that day, despite being a work/school day. I was really glad I didn't have to return to the pangolins at feeding time!

I don't know if my experience is typical but i went at feeding time and there were maybe 6 or 8 people there. I'm not sure people realise how rare pangolins are in captivity.
