Berlin Zoo Berlin zoo / Tierpark

I know that the Pheasantry houses a nice collection. But I cant remember wich bird species where housed in the bird house that is now closed. Tnx for the list, as far as I can see some parrots, some hornbills and small bird are behind the scenes.

Very well put, dublinlion. I was lucky enough to have visited London in the 1960s and 1970s when a full day would still leave exhibits unvisited. I'm not naive to think that it was perfect at that time - it certainly wasn't- but a lot of posters here don't seem to see the value of a diverse collection. It goes without saying that decent accommodation should be given for everything.

Where I would (hesitantly) criticise Berlin is that it doesn't seem to be maximising the benefits of the Tierpark's size. The cats in the Brehm house could very easily be given good homes in some of the underused wooodland, for example.

And some of the ungulates in the West really should be moved East to make space in the former - again, many of the cats in the West's Carnivore House are living in conditions that are 50 years out of date - in a house built in 1975!!

True, but that also goes for the cats in the east. The alfred brehm house is a disgrace. They could have given up a part of their collection, connect a few cages together, and give the remaining inhabitants at least a little more living space. And when you think of the space the zoo has.... but hey, why give big predators decent housing when you can waste it on deer?

I'd question the use of the word "waste" in respect of the East Berlin deer collection. There's a lot of space at the Tierpark that hasn't been touched.

I stress that if you want to pick a fight with me, criticising the cat accommodation in the Alfred Brehm house, most of which wouldn't be excessively large for parrots, wouldn't be the place to start!! :)

Could someone confirm for me whether 'Barbary lions' are accepted by the zoological fraternity as a recognised sub species?

Does anyone know how the building of the new bird house is going? Or a completion date as we are thinking of visiting during the summer but only to see the birdhouse. Thanks in advance

Not before December (2012), unfortunately.

Hello!

Does anyone know the species currently live in the Nocturnalhouse ? And do they have two exhibits for the Aye-Aye's ? Otherwise one of them has to be kept behind the scenes, and I can't imagine they have an exhibit big enough for an Aye-Aye.Which animals are kept together ?

Thanks.

When I visited in July of last year I seem to remember two exhibits for the Aye-aye in the nocturnal house.
They also had amongst other things;
Aardvark, Southern springhare and Senegal bushbaby
Grey mouse lemur
Rock cavy
Pallid gerbil
Vampire bat
Pallas' long-tongued bat and Seba's short-tailed bat
Ansell's mole rat
Steppe lemming

Thank you, Glutton.

So it seems, the Zoo has no longer Nightmonkey and Armadillios in the Nocturnal House to give the second Aye-Aye its own exhibit.

Have you seen Kinkajous ?

No - this is not correct. The nightmonkeys and the armadillos are still there, in a shared enclosure. Kinkajou are also present. Fennec foxes to, are missing from the list above - and others too, I am sure.

Strange. So I'm wondering in which exhibt is the second Aye-Aye ? As far as I know, there are only 15 enclosures.
