With the turn of the century now well gone what do you think have been the best improvements in zoo's since 2000 upto the present day 2010

I must admit the thing I find the best is the arrival of all the different types of walk throughs.

These can bring children and adults much closer to the actual species and in a way they have aided the education of most people

I am not going to name which I think are the best walk throughs because I think all walk throughs are great and have an educational value for everyone that sees them.

Also the arrival of the indoor/outdoor enclosures this gives a different perspective for both human and animals alike.

I can't wait for the next 10 years to see what the zoos/parks will come up with too get people back through the gates but all looks well and very exciting

In the United States, I think there is no question as to what is the most important zoowide trend of the first decade of the new century. It would have to be the reevaluation of the captive elephant situation, resulting in the importation of eleven wild-caught from southern Africa and somewhere around 50 accredited zoos agreeing to build expanded (multi-million dollar) exhibits.

In terms of a cooperative nationwide zoo movement, has there ever been anything like this in the history of zoos?

That is definatly the best thing that has happened in the history of American zoos. This decade has seen the creation of huge, amazing exhibits, incredible breeding achievements, and greater understanding of animals needs. This past decade has been the best for zoos by far, and if the zoo improvement rate continues into this decade, then zoos have a bright future ahead of them.
