It is easy to be tempted by shear aviary size or collection, and to choose one of the several well-known aviaries that are frequently talked about on Zoochat. But I'm going for a less popular choice this time.

Some of the best picture-perfect aviaries I have seen are found in NaturZoo Rheine in Germany. They're densily vegetated but still offer great views of the birds, allow the birds to interact with many natural elements (plants, sand, rocks, water etc.) and hold a fitting collection of birds, great for the general public and connoisseurs alike. But what gets me the most is that it is clear that so much genuine interest, care and dedication went into these little pieces of art. They may not be the actual "best" aviaries in the world (whatever that means), but they're certainly my favourites.

I realy love the aviaries at the Zoo Rheine. Espically the wader bird one. Which is one of the worlds most succesfull breeders of ruffs (on of my favourite animals) It is for years for me a tradition to go every spring to it, just becasue of the "fighting dance" of the males in there beautifull plumage . Don't forget the giant weaverbird colony.

Bronx and Leipzig, followed by North Carolina are probably my favorite aviaries that I've seen.

Which aviary in Leipzig? Vultures? Asian birds? Or am I missing something? Do you mean Gondwanaland?

Doué has some of the best walkthrough aviaries.

The South American aviary at Doue is probably my favourite, I have to agree. It has a really nice species variety, with birds of prey, macaws, ibises and even penguins. It is really nicely done and quite large.

Are you including exhibits with other non-bird species such as ZooPark Beauval's hippo exhibit and Buffalo Zoo's Rainforest Falls?

I think if Beauval's hippo exhibit is included, the so must Antwerp's Cape buffalo aviary and Doue's Okapi exhibit, all of which are spectacular. Haven't seen the buffalo aviary but hope to sometime soon.

My local zoo (Dierenrijk Mierlo) has a really big aviary but in my opinion the stocking could have been better and i would like to see more plants

The African Buffalo Aviary at Antwerp Zoo is a wonderfull mix between the old (rhino house and adjacent Egyptian temple) and the new (restaurant and bird complex). Although i.m.o. a bit to small for a buffalo herd, 't is superb for the birds.
