Best Big Cat Collection in a Small Zoo

Lovely Enclosure and knocks spots off Cheetah Rock at Whipsnade.

Looking forward to Chester take on Gorilla Kingdom......;)

yeah it should be great i didnt know that Chester were getting Gorillas Again?
I only knew that in the near future Marwell may be.
Also the Chessington one should be quite good and with that leading with the reconstruction of the zoo in a few years time it should be a pretty good and all in new enclosures. :)
Also what is Thrigby like for cats? i know they keep Sumatran Leopards and Clouded Leopards are they in Good enclosures?
Thanks for any news
Regards

As far as i know Chester would like to have Gorillas back but at the moment have no plans to do so.
Thrigby have Clouded Leopard,Amur Leopard,Snow Leopard,Golden Cat,Amur Leopard Cat and i think you meant to say Sumatran Tiger and not Sumatran Leopard. The A.L,S.L and S.T are held in quite large enclosures which are ok,the rest are in smaller enclosure which could do with been bigger but the site won`t allow it but they are well furnished and the cats always look very healthy.

Oh yes thanks for correcting me Zoogiraffe!
It seems like an interesting Collection , i have not been able to visit it yet but its on the list especially as they have Clouded Leopards!:)
Is there some sort of Glass Tunnel in with the tigers?
I have heard odd bits about it?
Have they had any major breeding successes with them?
Any info woud be great
regards

At the moment they are not breeding from any of the cats as they are either very old or the stud-book has recommend them not to bred from them.Thrigby is best described as different but i like it as its a very nice little collection.

Not a problem like to helpfull when i can, also the Female Amur Leopard is Black which is quite rare in this species of Leopard.

Blimey thats rather wierd is it just an obnormal Genetic mutation like White lions,White tigers etc?
would be great to see though.
Do you know anything about their snowleopard, is it Wicked from Banham zoo? i visited in 2006 and they were sending here there she would be very old now though.
regards

As far as i know the Amur Leopard is just a naturally occuring genetic mutation, not one that is bred in like the White Tigers and Lions. As for the Snow Leopard i think she may well still be at Thrigby i know thats one of the species they are not breeding from because of the age of the animals.

the black amur leopard came from a litter of pure amur leopards from the Cotswold wildlife park, burfod oxfordshire (credit to them!)

Has anyone been to Linton Zoo in cambridgeshire? in my opinion its the best cat collection in a small zoo im a bit biased though as its my favourite and home zoo!
Also Highland Wildlife Parks Big Cat Collection is growing very rapidly and i think for the best :)

Paradise Wildlife Park has got Hiding places/huts for the big cats so just ignore my comment of 'its all open'.
It was the place were i saw my first Lion Turkana in 2001.So it is rather special to me and also when i go i have always been able to talk to the keepers about the animals which is always very interesting and very good of the keepers to do so.

It is quoted as being the first melanistic(black) leopard ever recorded for the Amur subspecies. But I have also heard there may be impurity involved.

There is very small private owned zoo in germany with a amazing collection of big cats, so they breed cheetahs very sucessful ( but only because they handraise the youngsters, so the female comes again in heat and can breed again ), they also have sibirian tigers, lions, jaguars and, the only ones in germany, african leopards !
