These really show that even ugly grey concrete can be made to be beautiful and be made into natural history art !

Why are they black?

Well these are viewing windows into the enclosure (which also holds Bali mynah) so I think it would be impossible to have a white background like the plumage of the species.

This is really cool artwork and actually I really like that it highlights those smaller organisms of the ocean that are so critical to marine ecosystems.

Yeah, it's next to a little plankton exhibit with a tube-shaped tank with some kind of pelagic shrimp in it (unsigned so I don't know what species) lit with UV light (which makes part of the shrimps fluoresce orange), and a speaker playing a short recording about the importance of plankton to reef ecosystems.
