Out of curiosity, what features would be required and/or desired to make a snow leopard enclosure a "world beater"? Most seem to feature rocks and a couple of tree stumps... and that's about it.

Vertical space for the animals to climb and space for them to roam around seem to be components of a good snow leopard exhibit.

Abbotsford, Canada :D

The Akron Zoo is really nice for snow leopards. Cleveland is crappy and National Zoo is lackluster, but better than Cleveland but not as good as Akron.

It's been a while since I visited this thread, but we're not looking for "good", we want "world class"; the type of exhibit that would make fellow zoochatters sit up and take notice.

While I've only seen pictures and some video, Central Park's exhibit seems top notch.

The National Zoo has snow leopards???

If they do, they're hiding them. Perhaps he was mistaking the clouded leopards?

With Seattle & San Francisco having such famously bad weather, you'd think that both zoos would spotlight this foul weather feline here on the West Coast. Both are unfortunately lacking.

And for an odd tie-in: Snow Leopard Vodka. A portion of every purchase goes towards the species' conservation.

Having seen only a few on this list and being in the U.S., Bronx and CPZ doesn't do much for me. Roger Williams is ok, not the greatest. Short, bowl-shaped and shotcrete. Doesn't jive well. Woodland Park Zoo, is a slope. Reminds me of Cincy's horrible excuse for an exhibit, just with more greenery. Stone Zoo does it for me. They basically meshed in a section of the mountain. The cats can be at visitor level or at the top of the cliff. The leopards are surrounded by Markhor and stalk them within the confines of their exhibit. Visitors wait and search for the cats but they blend in well with the natural rocks. It is always nice to look up and find the leopards 45' above you, set back. The female uses the mesh to climb on one side while the male bounds the rocks as if they were a staircase. It looks great in any season, but was really nice this year with all the snow.

Well I have finally seen the exhibit at Zoo Zurich in person (exactly one month ago). After that, I do not think I will ever be satisfied with an American snow leopard exhibit.
