This is just a bit of fun to judge the general consensus on the best enclosure for Cassowaries in the UK. I have added a few photos from the gallery to make it easier for members to compare the different exhibits. If anyone wants to make an argument for a particular enclosure, please feel free to do so. Also, I would encourage people to list the enclosures in order of what they think is best.

The Puma and Sloth polls are closing soon if you haven’t yet voted do so before it closes.

Unfortunately there are no photos of this enclosure in the gallery. If anyone can describe or provide a photo of the enclosure that would be great.

i love how densely planted chesters exhibit is, and the access to a water source is very interesting as it is the only time i have seen a cassowary standing amongst the reeds!

I was going to comment that the image might be decieving as there is a water barrier.... But I guess they use the water! That definitely elevates the exhibit, I haven't seen them use the water personally.

The first photo is of the Johnstone's cassowary enclosure, the second is of the southern cassowary enclosure, which can only be viewed through the flamingo exhibit.

I’ve seen all of these exhibits apart from Hamerton & Dudley. I’ve voted Paignton as I think the three (one off show) enclosures best match their rainforest habitats. I’ve been lucky enough to see them wild in N Australia on many occasions and Paigntons is best, in my opinion.

Between the largest water source, largest stables and most convincing vegetation, I think Chester should easily win this.

I think Edinburgh deserves an honourable mention, however. It was where the first UK breeding of the species took place, I believe, and to this day they have a wonderful, undulating enclosure with many trees. Am I right in thinking that they have the only onshow indoors for the species in the UK?

The standards are generally quite high for cassowary enclosures in the UK, which is refreshing. Some are certainly on the smaller side, but make up for it with great planting and cover.

Whilst I've voted for Paignton, given its multiple on and off show exhibits and great enclosure design, Dudley deserves some commendation. The enclosure is well themed with Jurassic Park vibe interpretation, and both the main enclosure/separation area are both well planted.

No it’s not onshow anymore.

The one in chester is bigger than it looks and there are also 2 enclosures to split them when their not breeding rather than rotating them

The first successful cassowary breeding in the UK occurred at London Zoo, more than a hundred and fifty years ago, long before Edinburgh Zoo opened, when Bennett's cassowary hatched in Regent's Park in 1864.

Edinburgh was the first to breed double-wattled cassowary in 1967.

Poll closed. Congratulations to Chester for having the Best Cassowary enclosure in the UK. The dense paddock and high quality offshow areas gave this one the win, again showing strength of the Islands area in the zoo. A mention to Paignton who did well to come second with a dense enclosure. I think I will make my first poll on German zoos today, which means I'll be doing polls for 3 different countries at once :)

Chester: 64.4%
Paignton: 20.0%
Dudley: 8.9%
Edinburgh: 4.4%
Birdland: 2.2%
