And yet when you think people are merely voting for their favourite collection and have no other reason for thinking an exhibit is the best you call them out - so obviously some level of discussion and debate over what makes a collection "best" is required, elsewise it's just a popularity contest!

Ahem.... :p

I don't class saying I would be interested to understand the genuine reasons why people are voting for a particular enclosure as 'calling people out'.

As there are no 'rules' or criteria, of course discussion is required to understand why people are voting a certain way. I didn't realise discussion on a forum called 'ZooCHAT' was an inherently bad thing to try to partake in.

But stating that you assume people are just voting for their favourite collection unless they provide an explanation is.

Well, we're agreed on that point, and I never said that discussion was "inherently bad" at all :P

To flip things round and get things back onto the discussion you wish to partake in; why have you voted for Longleat over Edinburgh out of curiosity? I’m honestly genuinely interested, as up thread you said you had visited Edinburgh’s many times and Longleat’s just the one. What stood out for you at Longleat? :) Or was it just that the koalas were outside?

Some people are voting for their favourites - which is actually fine because this is all supposed to be a bit of fun and that is up to them. In no way was I demanding people 'provide an explanation' - I was asking to understand the reasons other than 'because it is my favourite'.

I actually don't think there is a lot to choose between them from the inhabitants pov - so my vote is based mainly on what I'd consider a better visitor experience at Longleat. The lack of glass makes a big difference. Obviously it was nice to see a Koala outside - but there is potential for that at both collections.

To be fair I think there have been instances where people have voted for a collection because it's their favourite (so this assumption would not be unreasonable in some situations). I remember a previous thread where there were votes for Edinburgh (by members from Northern Britain) which would be hard to justify based on any reasonable criteria beyond it being their favourite collection.

Politics and favouritism definitely have an impact on some votes but, hey "it's just for fun" and I'd argue the debate is more important than the result (if you're really disgruntled you can look who's voted and mentally weight their votes in an attempt to filter out bias, but remember your weightings will be biased in themselves).

The issue is that we’re talking about two different subspecies with (marginally) different environments and (completely) different appearances. The northern subspecies is smaller and is less furry, as the climate it’s found in is far more arid and tropical as it’s closer to the equator. The southern subspecies, despite also living in a largely warmer climate than the UK, has to deal with lower temperatures given that its found in areas further away from the equator, and thus has evolved to be bigger with a thicker coat.
If southern koalas were more prevalent in Europe then I’m sure there would be more open topped enclosures and we would see koalas in more outdoor situations, but the fact is that Longleat is the only true European (I’m not counting that Israeli zoo ZTL lists) zoo with southern koala, and therefore the only zoo where koalas are more likely to be seen outdoors in chillier weather and can withstand wind tunnel style environments...

People may try and argue that surely that makes Longleat a better enclosure as it’s more suited to the UK, but that’s not the game here. The game is which enclosure best suits its inhabitants, and both do so in a multitude of ways. But, as has been the case previously when matches are close/hard to compare, the second resort is husbandry and breeding record. And the truth is that Edinburgh’s stand-out husbandry and large amount of breeding says it all.

(Don’t get me wrong, I really like Longleat’s, but prefer Edinburgh’s!)
That is a good and persuasive point but you said that the Northern species seen in Edinburgh prefers arid climates.I will not call Edinburgh’s enclosure arid!It is essentially a rainforest exhibit.A small enclosure with dense vegetation that you will not find in an arid environment.

Poll closed. Congratulations to Edinburgh on winning the vote for Best UK Koala enclosure. It was a relatively large margin of victory and marked Edinburgh's third win following on from the Chimpanzee and Penguin polls.

Edinburgh: 73.5%
Longleat: 26.5%
