This is just a bit of fun to judge the general consensus on the best enclosure for Langurs in the UK. I have added a few photos from the gallery to make it easier for members to compare the different exhibits. If anyone wants to make an argument for a particular enclosure, please feel free to do so. Also, I would encourage people to list the enclosures in order of what they think is best.

The Warty pig poll is closing soon if you haven’t yet voted do so before it closes.

If you want to vote for Port Lympne (Javan) or Owl and Monkey haven please vote for the “Other” option in the poll.

Twycross Spectacled have been moved while they renovate their current exhibit. Right now they are in here. Hopefully they will be moved back in later this year though for now they’re in here. Their indoor area has two small quarters with tunnels leading to the outside enclosure unfortunately I have no photos of the indoors unfortunately.

I’m currently reserving judgment on Whipsnade. Personally, it still looks like an overgrown, defunct bear enclosure and could do with bit of thought going into it. When I visited, it felt like the langurs and babirusa had been chucked in there just to plug a gap.

Whilst there are better enclosures, as an “exhibit” I appreciate London’s. It’s one of few parts of the lion area that, thematically, you could associate the langurs with.

Beyond excited to see Whipsnade’s enclosure later this month, but until I have seen it for myself, it is difficult to comment. It looks lovely and enormous, but I do worry that the various climbing structures are too spread out and low-lying to allow the langurs proper climbing. At London, however, seems to offer much more height and variety, and I have even seen the langurs climb on the netting that forms the enclosure’s walls. For now, London takes my vote, but I may be tempted to switch to Whipsnade if someone who has seen the new enclosure can better inform me about how well it seems to suit the langurs at the moment.

I also remember liking the enclosure at Howletts, and although I have never been, Belfast looks decent from the photos.

I will not be casting a vote but i would say that London's exhibit is very good for viewing given that there are mutltiple vieweing points at two levels

I’m yet to see the langurs in their new space at Whipsnade - I’ve seen them in the house and the tunnel but they haven’t been outside. There are a decent number of frames and ropes but not much at height. There is a good amount of room though and climbing space / hiding space away from the front and visitors. When they get out in it there’s lots to do. I wouldn’t vote for it until I’ve seen them in it though. The babirusa on the other hand se to like it a lot and have been roaming about (often at speed but also rooting about) when I’ve visited.

Port Lympne (Javan)

Unfortunately there are no photos of this enclosure in the gallery. If someone can describe it or provide a photo that would be great.
Here are photos of the enclosures that the Javan langur were held in at Port Lympne on my last visit (May 2022).

I've not seen many of these exhibits, so maybe I shouldn't have voted. However, I have always been very impressed by the Javan Langur exhibit at Howelett's, as it feel less small primate and more Gibbon / Ape set up you see in Zoos, with more open area, lots of climbing apparatus and no mesh to make photos impossible. I like how it sits to the side of the Siamangs and the groups often watch each other. It's one of my favourite exhibits at Howlett's which is why it got my vote, but there are a number of others on the list, I've either not seen, or not really payed attention to when I've visited.

I'm a great believer of using mesh on primate enclosures for 2 reasons
1. It gives the animals greater scope of movement especially if the climbing frames have been scrimped on
2. It also gives added security

It seems a bit unfair somehow- the Javans at Howletts have a huge spacious enclosure with a grove of mature trees thrown in, while the Port Lympne one is just one of their early simple 'wood & wire' constructions. For langurs I think space to leap and bound from branch to platform/branch etc is a lot more important than netting on the sides of enclosures as they are not really a 'climbing' primate as such.

Score update. It’s between London and Howletts right now, with Belfast and Whipsnade behind. Both are very different enclosures but are still high quality.

Poll closed. Congratulations to Howletts for having the Best UK Langur enclosure. The very large enclosure for the monkeys gave them the win. However, it was an extremely close poll, with Belfast, London and Whipsnade all performing well. This is their third win so far. @AthleticBinturong what did you want to vote for?

Howletts: 28.2%
London: 25.6%
Belfast: 20.5%
Whipsnade: 20.5%
Twycross: 2.6%
Other: 2.6%
