The zoo mix / Africa lions debate is a mere consequence of bad genetic management of African lions in zoos over decades past. An issue few seemed willing or even able to confront. And: Yes since 2018 there is an African lion studbook managed by Givskud Zoo for now in EAZA (something I deeply deplore having flooded Europe with their own mix of zoo mix Africans for Yonker years). As an aside, this does raise some interesting questions: is there such a thing as “pure bred” African lions in any collection, or are they all just “Zoo lions?” And, secondly, where would you even begin to start a breeding programme-I’m assuming there’s a stud book?
I did not vote in the 5 - choice UK safari park. For personal reasons: I do not find a heap of lions lying about in large open grassland exhibits particularly exciting to see. But sorry, that is just my perception and misgivings of some of the safari park set uppies.
