I wouldn't really mind. I haven't seen sloth bears. I've been to London zoo twice, and have not ever got around to seeing them.

2 red panda cubs were born in june this year, looks like everything is going well this time round.

The single cub died of heart failure last time, that was a year or two ago. The cubs can be seen on a monitor by the exhibit and they are becoming quite active.

thats sad about the cub. i've seen the monitor last time i was there, we coud just see 1 cub but it was asleep.

The trouble with Sloth BEars is they are largely nocturnal by nature, so don't show a great deal. The London ones are a case in point. I'm not sure Sun Bears aren't the same though...

it woud be good if chester got a second bear species. it is a tragedy that bears arent really seen as much as they were in british zoos. Chester really shoud consider either the Sloth, Sun and Asiatic Blacks

Sloth bears nocturnal? I am very surprised to hear that, I have seen them lots of times in Berlin and Leipzig Zoo and they were always active during the day. In Berlin, they had 6 sloth bears at my last visit in spring.. Leipzig has around 7 but the facility has a large off-exhibit area and usually only 2 or 3 are visible for the public. I think they are a species which is very attractive for visitors, when presented in a good-sized enclosure with natural vegetation and some enrichment.

Same for sun bears - I have seen a lot of sun bears in different zoos and I don`t think they are usually nocturnal in zoos.

it is definately very sad so few in britain show bears only 1 with sun bear 1 with sloth bear 1 with polar bear 1 with american black bear 4 with spectacled bear 1 with asiatic black bear and 5 (i think) with european brown bear. i think only hwp looking to get the polar bear from edinburgh (still not definate) i can't think of any other zoos looking to get bears, i think port lympne, colchester and sandwich would be candidates for future holders, i think i feel a new thread starting....

Sloth bears are definately primarily nocturnal in the wild.(though I've seen one briefly in the daytime) I'll agree they can alter their behaviour in captivity though. You say that Berlin or Leipzig have a large number-of course the more there are, the higher chance some will be active at any given time. I admit too that I saw a mother and cubs fully active at Artris Zoo too. London's (there are three) seem to often be hiding away more...

Probably its the same difference for Sunbears, between the wild and captivity.
Sun bears are a rather more appealing species than Sloth bears. I think the latter are pretty ugly creatures. Can be nasty tempered too. Apparently in Sri Lanka Sloth Bears are greatly feared as being more dangerous to people than Leopards.

I would love for Chester to get Sun Bear- I think they could do a fantastic tropical exhibit. I think they might go for Sloth Bear though- it would probably fit better into the masterplan and provide another grassland or woodland animal as opposed to another rainforest species (rainforest's already being very well represented.) What other bear species could the consider, are there any really rare (but realistically obtainable) subspecies of either Brown or Asian Black Bears?

EDIT: Wait, I'll repost this in the bear thread.

Visitor numbers up on last year

Chester welcomed its millionth visitor in September, a month earlier than last year. Realm of the Red Ape must be pulling in the punters!

Good news about the millionth visitor - let me guess, a man a woman and a small child who was presented with a large cuddly toy. It usually is.

Zoo Days (filmed at Chester Zoo) begins on Channel 5 at 6.30pm on Monday 8th October.

The first programme is about trying to introduce Rosie to Quinto. They didn't get on.

its like reading an agatha christie and some bugger has ripped out the last page
