Will do in due course when I get round to branding them on a CD-Rom.

I have just completed a tour of several zoos in Germany and Czech Republic and have still spare days left on my train ticket. Perhaps I might consider going to Frankfurt and Hannover this very weekend.

So, if I manage to make it there, I will try to get some pictures of the Frankfurt tarictics for you!

Anyhow, would love to see your work on tarictic hornbills! Being an enthusiast myself for the birds and having seen them on numerous occassions in the wild. Did you know that many myths surround hornbills in SE Asia and that they are revered as birds of the upper world in animist societies?

Thanks so much Jelle, The Frankfurt zoo site does not give any information at all about it's hornbills. Would you like me to send you my Zoo photos when I've got some discs?

Hornbill, what do you think the hybrid male at Chester is? He looks like a Samar to me, but you are the expert.

That's Alfred! OOOOH let's think........

He can't be a mindoro taricitc hornbill, because he does not have thepink facial skin of the males. The only difference between male and female Mindoro taricitc hornbills is the colour of their facial skin. Males have pink and Females have blue.
He can't be a Sulawesi, as males have yellow feathers on their head and then they are primarily Black.
He doesn't look like either a Luzon or Visayan Taricitc hornbill because he does not have pronounced yellow/white stripes across the bill.
The last species of Taricitc hornbill is the mindanao. There are three subspecies, The mindanao (penelopides affinis affinis), the samar (penelopides affinis samarenisis) and the Basilan (penelopides affinis basilanicus).

The Samar has the smallest casque and has half the bill a whitish yellow. The mindanao has a mainly brownish bill and the Basilan has a all whitish brown except for a few brown groves which are evident in all penelopides affinis.

I Personally think that He's a hybrid, but as you said Rob, with some traces of Mindanao ( Samar probably) In his Genes. That's the best Answer I can give now.

Here are some of my Taricitc photos:

Does anyone have any pictures of the breeding pair of taricitcs? I need a picture for my project. I'm going on the 2nd of december, and to the Frostfair!!!

No not really. I'm giong for a nosy round the zoo and at about 1pm, I'm doing another behavioural study of the St Lucia tarictics.

We were going to the zoo on one of the adopter's days, but I had to have a piano lesson!!! I'm doing grade two at the moment, so I've GOT to practise.

Does anyone have any pictures of any penelopides hornbills, and if so could I see them? I'd really like to build up a gallery of photos of this group of hornbills, as there aren't many photos about.

Thanks.

Chester has achieved its best ever attendance. The figures for 2007 are 1,153,000 paying visitors. And there are still a few weeks to go.

If anyone's interested, i've uploaded the plans for the second bridge into the gallery which is currently being built.

I've been today and the section across the anoa island and the ramp down to the path by the lions is partially constructed. There has also been some minor work at the end of the path down from the onager and came enclosures.

I've been today! Some important notes:

The emerald monitors are now on-show in the realm of the red ape.

The leaf insects have been taken off exhibit in the realm of the red ape and there has been another species of insect put in it's place. I'll find it's name when I upload my photos.

The Timor sparrows were very active, rushing around with nesting material and such. I could only just see the scissor billed starling. They aren't making a good exhibit.

There are three aviaries intended for birds of paradise in the Islands in Danger exhibit. The main one, the front one and the back one. The main one has 3.0 red birds of paradise and a group of Mindanao bleeding hearts. The back one, as far as I know houses a female red BoP. The front one, which has housed a pair of Visayan Taricitc hornbills, now houses Socorro doves, according to the sign. I didn't see any. I only saw a mindanao bleeding heart and a pair of Salvadori's pheasant. This last species seems to be very common at Chester. They have 3.3 don't they?

A new rodent species has been put in with the Pouched rats and African dormice.

The okapi's were getting a bit frisky today. They were mixed together and Tim and some other keepers were watching eagerly. I was going to ask, but when I'd turned around he'd gone!

One of the Warty pig pairs has been split up. There is now a mature pair, and two segregated Juveniles, Not youngsters. The male has access outside and the female has a very small exhibit.

Patna was not out today, and there was nothing in the exhibit.

There has been a birth recently in the Sulawesi macaque group and the columbian spider monkeys.

A keeper was in with Tejas, and they were playing together.

The New pied tamarins are on show, they are very shy.

I could not see any Black lion tamarins.

There will be something that I've forgotten, so I'll post anything that falls into this category in this thread.

i think i seen you today ice skating i recogised you from your pics if it was you your brother spent most his time on his back lol

I've remembered more. The new Realm of the red ape insects are Sabah Thorn insects.

Also the female Javan Rhinoceros hornbill was investigating her nest box.

What vivarium are the emerald monitors in and what species did they replace (if any were replaced)?

The Timor sparrows were very active, rushing around with nesting material and such. I could only just see the scissor billed starling. They aren't making a good exhibit.

.

The Realm of the Red Ape had workmen in the vicinity of the scissor-billed starling aviary on Wednesday, maybe they've been upset by the unusual activity.

The Cattle House was closed on Wednesday, could the female pig be expecting?

The pond in Asian Plains has been cleaned , it was filmed by the TV people.

The rodent in with the Pouched Rat and Dormice is Tanzanian Grass Rat and they have been in theur fir nearly 4 months now.
