I noticed there was only 2 rhinos in Tsavo around 3 weeks ago as well. Whats going on at the moment with them? Also they were having a domestic inside the house!

Apparently one of the girls is expecting, and so sammy has been moved to another house to give them a rest!

The two girls were really active, and from the size of her i would gather its was manaryi (or how ever its spelt). Although see has all ways seemed big.

Does anyone know which two giraffe's are pregnant?

That is fantastic news!!:)
It's been far too long since Chester had a rhino baby...
It may also explain the recent aggressive behaviour towards sammy.

Well the two girls were really active today, running around chasing each other, but still had time to come over and say hello.

Can't wait for a baby rhino and hopefully there will be a few others in the nxt few years!

I told you lot in the same thread I think just a few days ago. Have some good patience .... It would be great to have a confirmed pregnancy in the black rhinos.

It shows that in order to build a stable herd you need the bulls to work over a good few years to make it work. Younger bulls essentially need considerable learning time and experience, that is before the females will accept them as good mates. And goodness me Sammy is only just 7! For a mature solid bull it should be more like 12!!!!!!!!!!!

I really think we ought to take this bit back to the black rhino threads. :D

taun, can you reveal your source or how reliable this news is?

On the giraffe: has Chester now just rothschildi's (and no longer holding hybrids)?

Thanx,

Jelle

As you can see in the post, i did say apparently pregnant! The source comes from a member of staff (One of the presenters) i asked so i would be more inclined to believe what they have said and the moving of sammy out is a bold move if they didn't have some good indication one was pregnant!

Well, fingers crossed for the rhinos!

I guess we'll find out in a couple of months when there are visible signs of pregnancy or if the zoo confirms it...

Chester have moved to Keeping and Breeding Pure Rothschild's giraffes.

That is true, but they still have one female thats i hybrid! (Rafters mother i believe) and there has been an issued raised regarding the purity of their giraffes!

They still have 1 hybrid but Tims in no rush to move her yet as shes a calming influence on the 2 young Rothschild cows, the plan is to keep her seperate from the Bull when she`s in season.

Baby Tapir at Chester Called Shadow!! She's only half the normal birth weight for baby tapirs so fingers crossed she survives!!

I saw an article in the MEN, and I'll try to find more info online!

The zoo has announced it visitor numbers for 2007 and it was 1'233'000, the busiest in the zoos 73 year history.
