The only problem they could have now is if the two original females try to prevent the new females from breeding by attacking their infants. . . . . . So be prepared for trouble ahead.... they may need to split them for successful breeding.

The largest subadult male was taking a close interest in the newcomers when I visited on Saturday. Depending on their relatedness, he may be a suitable mate for the new females.

Is there a particular reason why the warty pigs are being moved? (Zoning perhaps?)
Yep last i heard they were going near Islands in Danger along with the Babirusa to extend that zone,as that was suppose to be a 4 part project that got as far as stage 2 and stopped, just so you don`t ask the other 2 projects were some paddocks and doing something for birds using the old bird house corridor and avairys.

They can probably get these new females into the group okay- after some initial squabbling. The problem may be further down the line when they have babies, if the alpha female starts to try and kill them. Of course, she might be perfectly behaved and not show any aggression at all...

Or perhaps they will start a new subgroup using the largest subadult male with these females? It depends where the new females came from- if its from Colchester then the young males born at Chester are related to them- as their mother came from Colchester too...not that it matters that much.

Personally I'd rather see a single group, at least till its known what the outcome is with future infants.

Quick update on giraffe birth

Just saw a bit of news on the BBC news about the giraffe

I think this is already mentioned but the baby giraffe is from one of the purebreds.

She was born two weeks early, and is the smallest giraffe to born at the zoo at 1.2m.

I gather from them releasing pictures and news, everything is going quite well with hand raising "Margaret" :p

Do you think they can get the mother to readopt the calf when she's grown a bit? I guess her milk will have dried up by then, and if its a first calf, there's probably no chance anyway. Still, many giraffes have been handraised successfully over the years-it doesn't seem to affect them adversely, as its usually done with the calf in contact with the other giraffes.

So, this kind of building work is proceeding despite the recent no to big projects? Hope it will move forward soon as I think both babirusa and warty pigs (with anoa) and so on belong in that particular Islands in Danger zone.

Also, from the transcript on the cheetah project, can we conclude that it means they will get Somali\north-eastern cheetah from UAE for the enclosure?

Well the building works not stated yet but as far as i`n aware this is still considered a small project as the cost isn`t that much,i believe at the moment its in the early planning stage,as for the Cheetahs think you my be right with that.

What has happened to the zoo's hybrid tarictic hornbills?

They are not on ISIS anymore... I know that zoos can cull animals if they are not needed in the breeding programme, But I wouldn't imagine that these hornbills would be culled...

They could have gone to a none ISIS listed collection their are still quite a few about in the U.K and Europe,if they have culled them its a pity as they could have sent them to a collection wanting to the experience of keeping Hornbills.

What's this I hear about a new African bird aviary at Chester?

Apologies if it's already been mentioned in this thread, but it's grown into quite a monster and I haven't had the inclination to re-read all 400 posts!

An African aviary was originally planned to be built near the Tsavo rhino house. Knowing how things change it could be built anywhere now.

Quite alright we will let you off the aviary should be housing a pair of Southern Ground Hornbills and possibly some other smaller species?????????????

Sibu is coming back!!

Work has begun on re-developing the old Orang-Utan island for Sibu, Chester's old Bornean Male.

Bongorob or zoogiraffe, do you know why he is coming back, what they are doing to the island and where did he go originally?

I was at the zoo over the summer, and I was told of this.

I believe he went to Barcelona originally and is currently at Alpenheul.

He is coming back, I think, because he was not doing very well at either of the two parks. He is Chester's animal, but I'm not sure reall, whether there is enough room in RotRA to house him well. I imagine that he will sense the presence of Tuan, and this may stress him. There are already 2 males at the zoo. A third could be too much..

He is an amazing creature though:D

He never mated the females at Apenheul and showed no interest in them. In Chester he can be mixed with one female with whom he had lived before he moved to Barcelona and apparently that went much better then with any other females. This is what Apenheul published about the reason of his move back.

I've just read a story where he is more turned on by his blonde, tatooed, keepers than other Orangs ;). Although, the article also mentions that he formed a bond with an unnamed female currently at Chester before departing (Martha or Leia perhaps?)

He was a very impressive male as well!
