Billabong Zoo Billabong Zoo News

A few bits of news from the past couple of months:

*Billabong Zoo acquired Pygmy Marmosets and 2.0 Golden Lion Tamarins. Both species live in a mixed species exhibit. Consequently the zoo now has five species of primate (four species of callitrichid and spider monkeys): Log into Facebook | Facebook

*the zoo has just announced the arrival of a new species - Spencer's Monitors (Varanus spenceri). They are on display in their reptile house: Log into Facebook | Facebook

Its nice to see some of the smaller zoos obtaining these species not only for there own collection plan but to boost overall numbers held within the region!

Billabong Zoo have just posted a 2022 summary with several newsy updates on FB page. They clearly had a productive year:
  • the zoo have opened a new South American aviary for Blue-fronted Amazon Parrots and Blue-and-Gold Macaws. An article from early 2022 also states they have plans to acquire Short-beaked Echidna.
  • a Little Penguin and Bush Stone-Curlew hatched at the zoo. Not news as such, but they also have a Glossy Black-Cockatoo as well.
  • new species for the reptile collection have included Pygmy Bearded Dragon and notably both Green Iguana and Fijian Crested Iguana.

Piece of 2023 News Not Mentioned:

On January 31st, it was announced that the zoo transferred a (0.1) slender-tailed meerkat named Padfoot/Paddy to the Altina Wildlife Park in New South Wales.

I had a quick visit to Billabong today, mainly for the Snow Leopard encounter. During the encounter I was able to ask the keeper about further plans for Snow Leopards at Billabong once their two elderly males, Khumbu and Sabu, pass. The keeper confirmed Billabong is committed to keeping the species there, and that they’ll import if needed. She also mentioned that Tasmania Zoo is looking to import a female to pair with Sikari from Melbourne. I’m glad that Billabong is going to continue with Snow Leopards, they’re a beautiful species and I’d hate to see them phased out over the coming years!

A few casual updates,

On a holiday trip celebrating my milestone birthday in QLD. Dropped by Billabong and thought it was quite lovely. Lovely gardens and a massive dedication to native species. Their reptile collection was stunning with crocodile Shrek a massive highlight.
There were some worksites and a keeper mentioned they are set to have new species coming in 2025 such as otters, new leopards, baby koalas and a mystery animal. Billabong is a zoo I’ll definitely return to and such gorgeous gardens and a big 2025.

The place apparently flooded recently according to some family members so this may delay the new works.

By leopards are you referring to Sri Lankan leopards (which would be a new species for the zoo); or a continuation of holding Snow leopards as has previously been reported?

There are a handful of un-paired Sri Lankan leopards in the region including 1.1 at the National Zoo; and 0.1 at Darling Downs Zoo.

There’s not currently a surplus of Snow leopards meaning they would have to import (as has previously been suggested) or wait for Melbourne Zoo to breed a second litter.

I didn’t think to ask. I will ask my nieces who are locals to clarify :)
